Diadem Nova V3 Series Tennis Racquet

This is a big-sweetspot, easy-power lens of a frame for people who want the ball to go somewhere without an argument about it. It has been landlocked in a warehouse for months and is not hiding the fact. A slow walk round Breda's canals first, then you may sign something.

Grote Kerk of Breda

Diadem Nova V3 Series Tennis Racquet: Ninety-seven metres of tower. Ninety-seven, with an onion spire added later, and I would like to know by whom and how carefully. The Grote Kerk, or Church of Our Lady, begun around 1410 and built over more than a century, is one of the finest Brabantine Gothic churches in the Netherlands and the burial place of the lords of Breda, ancestors of the Dutch royal family. In the Prince's Chapel lies the alabaster Renaissance tomb of Engelbrecht II of Nassau, count and wife beneath a slab borne by four kneeling warriors, which have been holding it up for five centuries without a break. Whitewashed after the Reformation, with medieval murals, carved choir stalls and Nassau heraldry surviving. Everyone stay together.

Breda Castle

Diadem Nova V3 Series Tennis Racquet: Nobody wander, this is a working officer school. The Castle of Breda was the seat of the Nassau dynasty, the family that produced William of Orange and the Dutch royal house, and Count Henry III rebuilt it from 1536 as one of the first Renaissance palaces north of the Alps with the Italian architect Tommaso Vincidor of Bologna. Then in 1590 Maurice of Orange retook the city with soldiers hidden in a peat barge that slipped through the water gate. Men, under peat, in the dark, on water, hoping nobody coughed. The Turfschip of Breda, remembered at the Spanjaardsgat watergate nearby. Since 1828 the Royal Military Academy has held the castle, so it is guided tours only.

Begijnhof Breda

Diadem Nova V3 Series Tennis Racquet: Voices down, please, people actually live here. The Begijnhof is a rare surviving beguinage in the northern Netherlands, a walled court where beguines, devout lay women who took no permanent vows, lived in independence and prayer. Breda's community is first documented in the thirteenth century and moved to this court in 1535 at the invitation of Count Henry III of Nassau. Modest brick houses frame a celebrated herb garden of some three hundred medicinal and culinary species beside the Church of St Catherine, and I would not want to confuse two of those. It endured Reformation and war under Nassau protection, and the last beguine of Breda, and of the Netherlands, died in 1990. Mind the step.

Valkenberg Park

Diadem Nova V3 Series Tennis Racquet: Open ground, good, I can see everyone. Valkenberg Park lies between the castle and the railway station, so nearly every visitor arriving on foot crosses it into the old town, which is a great many people and not many paths. The name means falcon mountain: these were the pleasure grounds of the castle, where the lords of Nassau kept and flew their hunting falcons, opened to the public and relandscaped in the English style in the nineteenth century once the castle became a military academy. Mature trees, lawns, ponds, flowerbeds, and the Nassau-Baronie Monument of 1905, a bronze fountain marking four centuries of Nassau and Breda. Festivals and light shows all year. Please mind the ponds.

The Breda, Netherlands track

Diadem Nova V3 Series Tennis Racquet

Written for this world alone.

The Nova V3 is the forgiving end of Diadem's line, and the V3 update is the third pass at the same brief: a 100 square inch head, a 16×19 string pattern and an expansive sweet spot that returns power without demanding a full swing.

The standard Nova V3 100 sits at 10.6 oz / 300 g unstrung, which is club-standard weight, and the series runs either side of it — the Nova V3 Lite at 9.5 oz / 270 g for players who want the frame to do more of the work, and the Nova V3 Tour at 11.1 oz / 315 g for those who would rather supply their own pace and have the frame hold steady under it.

Same head size, same open pattern, three different amounts of mass.

That matters more than it sounds. A 100 in² head with a 16×19 pattern is the most useful shape in tennis: enough spacing for the mains to snap back and generate spin, enough face to survive a late contact. The choice you are really making in this series is how much of the ball's speed you want to bring yourself.

Breda earns its place on the handle. This is a Dutch city that has spent five hundred years proving that the clever route beats the strong one — in 1590 a skipper hid roughly seventy soldiers beneath a load of peat, floated them straight into the castle harbour at the Spanjaardsgat, and took the town back from its Spanish garrison overnight.

That is the Nova's whole argument: you do not have to swing harder if the thing is built right. You will get use out of this everywhere from a windy court by the Mark river to a covered hall in January, and by the way, it is a fine racquet for a country that cycles everywhere — light enough in the Lite spec to ride in a bag over the Grote Markt without you noticing it.
