Arrah House (the Little House)

Diadem Super 25 Junior Tennis Racquet: I know this building at three in the morning, when it holds its breath. Richard Vicars Boyle, a railway engineer, fortified it — it began as a billiard room — by 17 June 1857: verandah arches bricked up, loopholes cut, food, water, weapons and ammunition stocked inside. From 27 July to 3 August 1857 a garrison of eighteen civilians and fifty men of the Bengal Military Police Battalion under Jemadar Hooken Singh held it against thousands of mutinying sepoys and irregulars led by Kunwar Singh. Herwald Wake, magistrate of Shahabad district, commanded the defence and kept his record by writing on the walls. Major Vincent Eyre's column relieved the house on 3 August. It holds a museum on Kunwar Singh now.

Aranya Devi Temple

Diadem Super 25 Junior Tennis Racquet: This one never sleeps, and I have stopped expecting it to. Aranya Devi is the tutelary deity of Arrah, and the town's name comes from aranya, forest, for the woodland that once surrounded the shrine. The sanctum holds two distinct ancient idols, one of them identified with Adi Shakti. By local tradition the Pandavas stayed at Arrah during their exile and installed the image after the goddess appeared to Yudhishthira in a dream. It is the centre of Bhojpuri devotion for the whole district, thousands of visitors daily, and at Navratri you cannot move. People come before any major undertaking. Some come at two in the morning. I let them in.

Maulabagh Mosque

Diadem Super 25 Junior Tennis Racquet: Built in 1814 under the patronage of John Deane, an official of the East India Company, when Arrah was the headquarters of Shahabad district under Company rule. Mixed Saracenic, they call the style: three domes and eight minarets, and after dark those minarets are the last shapes to leave the skyline. Deane died in 1817 and was buried in the garden outside the mosque, so he never really left the thing he paid for; I nod to him on the round. Arrah holds other Islamic architecture in the same broad tradition, including a Jama Masjid with four minarets that local tradition assigns to the reign of Aurangzeb.

Ramna Maidan and Veer Kunwar Singh Stadium

Diadem Super 25 Junior Tennis Racquet: Roughly sixty acres, the largest open ground in Arrah, with the Veer Kunwar Singh Stadium in it — cricket, football, hockey — and at night it is the biggest quiet space for miles: floodlights off, one dog, the occasional cyclist cutting the corner. Both are named for Kunwar Singh, born at Jagdishpur on 13 November 1777, who at about eighty became a chief organiser of the 1857 rebellion in the Bhojpur country, taking command after the Danapur revolt of 25 July 1857 and occupying Arrah two days later. He died on 26 April 1858. Bihar also named the university founded here in 1992 and the Arrah-Chhapra bridge of 2017 after him.

<p>Arrah sits on the flat middle-Ganges plain in Bihar, in the Bhojpuri heartland, on land that spends half the year baked and the other half under a monsoon that arrives like something has been dropped.

It is a town that knows exactly what happens when a small thing holds against a very large thing — in 1857 a handful of people held out for a week in a little fortified billiard room here. The Super 25 is a small thing built to hold.</p>
<p>It is a real junior frame, not a beach racquet.

Head size 100 square inches, length 25 inches, weight 8.5 ounces / 240 grams, balance 1 point head-light at 315 millimetres, string pattern 16 x 19, grip size G0 at 4 inches. The construction is carbon and glass fibre, and it comes pre-strung with a soft synthetic gut, so it plays the day it arrives.

Diadem prices it at $99.95 and puts the 25-inch length at ages nine to eleven, describing it as a junior player's first step toward the Nova series.</p>
<p>What those numbers actually buy: 240 grams is light enough that a child finishes the swing instead of being dragged around by the head, and a near-neutral 1 point head-light balance keeps the frame from tipping in a small hand.

A 100 square inch head is a huge target for someone still learning where the ball is going to be.

The soft synthetic gut is deliberately forgiving, low-shock string for a growing arm — and when it eventually breaks, that is a good sign, not a fault.</p>
<p>It will get used everywhere from a school ground in Arrah to a strip of dry canal bank in the cold season, and by the way: in Bihar the tennis season is decided by the sky, not the calendar.

From June the monsoon owns the afternoons, so the serious hitting happens in the winter, in the mustard-flower months, when the mornings come up clean and the light is unbelievable and nobody has to run for cover at four o'clock.</p>
