Manisa, Turkey
01
cardio tennis in 33317 — Manisa Grand Mosque in Manisa, A fourteenth-century mosque of rough stone and reused antique columns on the slope of Spil Mountain, with a low dome, arcaded courtyard, and brick minaret overlooking the city
Stop one

Manisa Grand Mosque

Dunlop Sports Team Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): Golden hour on the slopes of Mount Spil with the whole plain behind us — this is giving empire. Ulu Cami, the Grand Mosque, built in 1366 by Ishak Çelebi of the Saruhanid principality, who had taken the region from the Byzantines and made Manisa his capital. Now zoom in on the arcaded courtyard, because those columns and capitals were salvaged from ancient buildings of the region, so the whole thing is a vintage haul. The prayer hall's dome sits on an octagonal support system scholars read as a forerunner of later Ottoman experiments. Madrasa and the founder's tomb in the complex. Are you getting the columns? Get the columns.

02
cardio tennis in 33317 — Sultan Mosque in Manisa, A sixteenth-century Ottoman mosque with a broad central dome, slender minarets, and an arcaded forecourt, set among gardens in the centre of Manisa
Stop two

Sultan Mosque

Dunlop Sports Team Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): They throw medicine off a minaret here and it is unhinged in the best possible way. Sultan Camii was built in 1522 for Ayşe Hafsa Sultan, wife of Selim I and mother of Suleiman the Magnificent, while her son was serving as prince-governor — Manisa was where Ottoman heirs learned statecraft. The complex held a madrasa, primary school, bath, and a hospital renowned for treating mental illness. A spiced paste credited with curing Hafsa Sultan was handed out from the mosque, and every spring thousands still gather while it is scattered from the minarets and domes. Five centuries running, and on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Hashtag mesir.

03
cardio tennis in 33317 — Muradiye Mosque in Manisa, A classical Ottoman mosque with a grand central dome, slender paired minarets, and an interior glowing with blue-and-red Iznik tile panels
Stop three

Muradiye Mosque

Dunlop Sports Team Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): The tile wall. The TILE WALL. Muradiye was commissioned by Sultan Murad III, who had served as a princely governor here before taking the throne, and completed in 1586 — designed in the office of Mimar Sinan in his final years and built out by his successors, which makes it one of the last major works associated with the greatest of Ottoman imperial architects. The mihrab wall is sheathed in İznik tiles from the most celebrated period of that craft: tulips and carnations in coral red and cobalt. Fine central dome. Madrasa and imaret alongside, and the madrasa long held the Manisa Museum's collections. No filter. There is no filter.

04
cardio tennis in 33317 — Weeping Rock of Niobe in Manisa, A weathered grey rock outcrop on the edge of Manisa shaped uncannily like a mourning woman's veiled head, facing the city below Mount Spil
Stop four

Weeping Rock of Niobe

Dunlop Sports Team Tennis Bag (12 Racquet): Stand back, tilt your head, and a face comes out of the rock — that is the whole shot, no editing at all. On the southern edge of Manisa at the foot of Mount Spil, the Ağlayan Kaya has been identified since antiquity with Niobe, the queen of Greek myth who boasted that her fourteen children outshone Leto's two; Apollo and Artemis killed them all, and Niobe, dissolved in grief, was turned to stone on Sipylus. Ancient writers including Pausanias, who came from these parts, describe the stone of Niobe here and note that it seemed to weep from a distance. Seepage once ran down it like tears. This one I am not going to be funny about.

And what a fairground I've booked for it: Manisa, Turkey, the only city on Earth whose greatest show involves throwing CANDY OFF A MOSQUE!

I kid you not, friends — every spring at the Mesir Macunu festival, a paste of forty-one spices is blessed and hurled from the domes and minarets of the Sultan Mosque to crowds below, a tradition nearly five centuries old, honored by UNESCO itself! They say the paste cured a sultan's mother and cures whatever ails you — catch some, stow it in pocket number six!

From the Grand Mosque of 1366 to the stone face of weeping Niobe herself, this bag carries your team's whole season through it all. And it is ALSO PERFECT FOR carrying a whole squad's kit up the slope of Mount Spil to the Weeping Rock, where a queen of Greek myth turned to stone and has been crying about it ever since! Don't walk — RUN!
