Head Revolt Pro 4.5 Clay Women's Tennis Shoes

At 3 a.m. it explained why an ankle must not travel sideways during a slide. The answer is a rigid 180-degree cradle and three sole layers under a herringbone tread; the other answer is Kirkuk, which — annoyingly — it is right about.

Stop one

the citadel mound above the Khasa river, a blue dome over the old town

Head Revolt Pro 4.5 Clay Women's Tennis Shoes: The citadel sits on an ancient mound above Kirkuk, and I am also on a mound, emotionally, made of espresso and poor decisions. The Khasa River is down there somewhere, which is helpful because my thoughts have started looking for tributaries.

Stop two

the tomb of the Prophet Daniel inside the citadel walls

Head Revolt Pro 4.5 Clay Women's Tennis Shoes: Inside the citadel walls is a tomb traditionally attributed to the Prophet Daniel, which is a serious sentence and I am trying to stand respectfully while my sleep-deprived brain keeps inventing footwork drills. Prophecy, apparently, did not warn me about this many laces.

Stop three

the Qishla, the Ottoman barracks block below the mound

Head Revolt Pro 4.5 Clay Women's Tennis Shoes: The Qishla is an Ottoman-era barracks block below the citadel mound, and yes, “barracks” is where soldiers stayed, not what my knees are doing at 3:17 a.m. Though honestly, there is structure here, which is more than I can say for my circadian rhythm.

Stop four

Baba Gurgur, the burning gas vents where the 1927 gusher blew in

Head Revolt Pro 4.5 Clay Women's Tennis Shoes: Baba Gurgur is famous for natural gas fires and for the 1927 gusher that helped put the Kirkuk oil field on the map, which is a lot of pressure for one landscape before breakfast. The vents are burning; I am also burning, but mine is just caffeine and existential calf raises.

The Kirkuk, Iraq track

Written for this world alone.

Right — I have not slept, so let me start with the sole, because that is the part that keeps me up. Clay shoes live or die on the tread, and this one is cut in a full herringbone pattern: zigzag ridges across the whole outsole that grip the loose top layer and then let it fall out again instead of packing it solid. That is the whole trick.

A clogged sole is not a shoe, it is a bar of soap. Anyway, where was I — right, the rest of it.

The upper is durable mesh over an engineered PU moulded chassis, with a 3D-TPU heel counter and lacing straps integrated straight into the eyelets.

The Lockdown Strap pulls the midfoot down so the foot stops travelling inside the shoe when you slide, and the Heel Stabilizer 180 wraps the entire back of the heel — half a circle of structure, which sounds like marketing until you have rolled an ankle out of a shoe that did not have it.

Midsole is triple density with a higher heel-to-toe drop and a 3D anti-torsion midfoot shank. All of it sits under Head's T-KORE 360 banner, which is their way of saying the stability parts talk to each other.

Aggressive baseliners who are hard on footwear: this is your model.

Kirkuk keeps odd hours too. At Baba Gurgur the gas has been burning out of the ground for longer than anyone can date, and it does not stop at night — the 1927 gusher blew in there and the flames were already old news.

I have watched that in my head at four in the morning more than once.

You will wear these everywhere from a red-clay morning clinic to a long dusty three-setter that finishes in the dark, and they are also perfect for the hour afterwards, when Kirkuk is glasses of black tea at a stall below the citadel and nobody is in any rush to go home.

Sleep is optional. Traction is not.
