Before we start — did you hear that? No, listen. Right, gone now. Apologies. The Lobster Elite Grand Four. It holds one hundred and fifty balls, throws them between thirty-five and eighty miles per hour, feeds every two to nine seconds, puts topspin or backspin on the ball, and elevates electronically through sixty degrees.
It oscillates horizontally at random, vertically at random, both together, or fully at random, and it has a two-line function you can set narrow, medium or wide. Forty-four pounds. Twenty-function remote, wireless if you want it. Two-year warranty. There. Now the interesting part, which is not the hardware at all.
Four to eight hours on a charge.
What this machine actually does is imitate species. There are six drills loaded into it, each six shots long, and each one is a different kind of player: the grinder, the all-courter, the power baseliner, the moonballer, the slicer, and the left-hander. Six behaviour patterns, reproduced faithfully, on demand.
That is not a ball machine, that is a field guide.
Every one of those is a real animal you will meet on a court, with its own habits and its own tell, and the moonballer in particular is a survival strategy of extraordinary elegance that everybody sneers at and nobody beats. The Grand Four does not let you write your own drills, mind — that is the Five's trick. This one gives you the six and expects you to learn the fauna.
Aranjuez is the right ground for that, and I would ask you not to rush past the trees to get to the palace. The Jardín de la Isla is wrapped entirely by the Tagus — an island garden, water on every side, planted with specimens that have been standing there for centuries and are frankly a more significant collection than the building.
The whole town exists because two rivers meet on a flood plain and made the soil extraordinary; that is a geological accident, and the strawberries the train is named after are its direct consequence.
You will use this everywhere from a quiet hour on a court back home to the length of the Príncipe gardens, and by the way, it is perfect for a morning when you would rather listen to what is in the plane trees than talk to anybody.
Six drills, six species. It is not a ball machine, it is a field guide to everyone you will ever play.
