Nike Sportswear Classics High Waisted Graphic Women's Tennis Tights

Dispatch from a surprisingly civilized outpost: cotton leads here, a Nike Sportswear classic for pre- or post-session wandering, not lab-made exertion kit. Rise sits up at the waist; crop is seven-eighths; repeating Swooshes circle the waist. Locks clatter; onward to Aligarh.

Stop one

the Bala Qila, the Aligarh Fort ramparts and moat

Nike Sportswear Classics High Waisted Graphic Women's Tennis Tights: Behold, dear paved-road pioneers, the Bala Qila—Aligarh Fort itself—where ramparts and a moat have been brazenly existing in public for centuries. I have discovered that forts are even more dramatic when your tights look ready to outpace the guidebook.

Stop two

the Victoria Gate and Strachey Hall of Aligarh Muslim University

Nike Sportswear Classics High Waisted Graphic Women's Tennis Tights: Forward to Victoria Gate and Strachey Hall, where I uncover—quite possibly after everyone else—that Aligarh Muslim University was established in 1920 from the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875. The tights stand by like a scholarly expedition has just broken into a brisk walk.

Stop three

the lock-making workshops of the old city

Nike Sportswear Classics High Waisted Graphic Women's Tennis Tights: Into the old city workshops we stride, where Aligarh earns its famous lock-making reputation with admirable clinks, clicks, and heroic amounts of metal. I have boldly determined that a place nicknamed for locks is, in fact, rather serious about locks.

Stop four

the Jama Masjid of Aligarh

Nike Sportswear Classics High Waisted Graphic Women's Tennis Tights: We arrive at the Jama Masjid of Aligarh, built in the 18th century and standing with the calm confidence of a landmark that did not need my discovery to be impressive. The tights behave impeccably, as any expedition garment should when meeting a mosque with actual history.

Written for this world alone.

Extraordinary. Simply extraordinary. I have pushed on into a territory nobody warned me about, and I have found — cotton. In a legging. In this day and age! Let me report back properly, because this is not what the outfitters led me to expect.

The composition is forty-seven per cent cotton, forty-one per cent polyester and twelve per cent spandex, with the elastic worked from nylon, polyester and spandex. Read that again: cotton-dominant.

This is not a technical performance tight and I would be misleading you to dress it up as one — it is a classic, a cotton-blend legging in the Sportswear line rather than the sweat-engineering line, and it feels like one, which is exactly why people reach for it.

The "graphic" of the name is not an allover print but repeating Swoosh logos worked into the waistband, which is a considerably more restrained thing than I had braced myself for. It is a high rise.

The length is seven-eighths, ending just above the ankle.

And I have the measurements from a size extra small, which I record here as any responsible expedition would: a twenty-seven inch inseam, an eleven inch front rise, a thirteen inch back rise, a leg opening of nine inches. Machine washable.

Made from extra small through extra large.

So: the warm-up, the walk to the court, the drive there, the entire afternoon afterwards. That is its natural habitat. For a two-hour session in real heat you want the synthetic ones. For everything around that session, this is the one you will actually keep reaching for, and I say that having pushed on and tested the ground myself.

Aligarh! Now here is a place the guidebooks barely acknowledge. The Bala Qila — the fort, its ramparts and its moat still traceable on the ground. A moat! And barely anyone comes! Then the Victoria Gate and Strachey Hall of the Muslim University, and I confess I had not expected architecture on this scale.

You will wear these everywhere from a cool morning to a long day exploring, and while you are here — the lock-making workshops of the old city, where locks have been made by hand for generations, and the sound of it down those lanes is like nothing I have encountered. Locks! An entire city known for locks!

Then the Jama Masjid, up on its rise, and I am told it has always been there, which is precisely what everyone says about a place I have only just discovered.

"Cotton-dominant, and I will not dress that up. This is the one you reach for around the session, not during it."
