Forget the styling for a moment. I want to talk about the actual problem a tennis dress is solving, because it is a more interesting engineering brief than anyone gives it credit for and almost nobody states it plainly.
A serve puts the shoulder through close to its full range while the torso rotates underneath it. A split step loads and unloads the whole body twice a second.
Between those, the garment has to stay where it was put.
That is the brief: full articulation at the shoulder, no ride-up at the hem, and no fabric bunching where the arm meets the body — and it has to be solved in a single layer, because every layer you add is heat you cannot get rid of.
This one is built in moisture-wicking fabric, which is the other half of the same problem: sweat sitting in the weave is dead weight and it is also the thing that makes cloth cling and stop sliding over skin. Move the moisture out and the fabric keeps behaving like fabric. Structurally, that is not a comfort feature.
It is a load-management feature.
Créteil will delight anyone who thinks this way, because Créteil is a town that took structural questions seriously in public.
Les Choux — Gérard Grandval's cabbage towers — are residential blocks with curved concrete balconies stacked in tiers so that every flat gets an outdoor room and a bit of shade, and whatever you think of how they look, that is a genuine solution to a genuine problem, executed at scale, in concrete.
Then Notre-Dame de Créteil, sitting under two great timber shells that lean over the building like hands cupped around it. Timber, at that span. Somebody did the calculations and then had the nerve to build it.
You will wear this everywhere from a hard court session to a long afternoon outdoors, and while you are here — Lac de Créteil is a flooded gravel pit turned into a sailing lake, which is my favourite category of place: the hole left by taking something out, refilled and given a better job.
Then the medieval Église Saint-Christophe over in Créteil-Village, which has stood there through all of it without needing to be re-engineered at all. The oldest solution in town is still the one requiring the least maintenance. That is usually how it goes.
