Margelliç Castle crowns a commanding hill on the edge of the Myzeqe plain, near the village of Margelliç in the municipality of Patos. The site was fortified in antiquity, when it belonged to the Illyrian world that also produced the nearby cities of Apollonia and Byllis, and archaeologists have traced walls and occupation layers from the ancient period right through into the Middle Ages, when the stronghold guarded routes between the coast and the interior hill country. From the summit the view sweeps across the plain toward the Adriatic on a clear day, which explains its long strategic life. It is the principal historical monument of the Patos area, standing directly above a landscape now dotted with oil wells.

Apollonia Archaeological Park

Apollonia was founded around 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corinth and Corfu, on hills above the Vjosa river plain a short distance from modern Patos. It grew into one of the great cities of the Adriatic coast, minting its own coins and hosting a famous school of rhetoric — and the young Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus, was studying there in 44 BC when the news came of Julius Caesar's assassination. The city declined after an earthquake shifted the river and silted its harbour. French archaeologists began excavating in the 1920s and uncovered the bouleuterion facade, the odeon, the stoa and the city walls, and the grounds also hold the medieval Byzantine monastery of Saint Mary, with a museum of finds.

Byllis Archaeological Park

Byllis stands southeast of Patos on a plateau high above the Vjosa, and it was one of the largest cities of southern Illyria, founded around the fourth century BC as the centre of the Bylliones tribe, with a great theatre, a stadium, an agora and a powerful circuit of walls. It flourished again in late antiquity as a bishopric, when basilicas paved with rich mosaics were built, and its defences were reconstructed in the sixth century under Emperor Justinian by the engineer Victorinus, whose name survives in inscriptions. Sacked in the Slavic invasions and abandoned, which is why the ruin field is so unusually complete.

Patos-Marinza Oil Field

The Patos-Marinza oil field was opened up in the late 1920s, when foreign companies began drilling the hills around Patos, and it is generally described as the largest onshore oilfield in continental Europe. Its heavy crude made the district one of the earliest centres of the Albanian petroleum industry — worked under Italian concession, then by the communist state, and since the 1990s by international operators. And it made the modern town: in 1949 a new settlement for oil workers was laid out, and Patos grew as the City of Oilmen, its identity tied to the engineers and drillers its civic history celebrates.
