Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16g Tennis String Set: OH. OH THIS IS THE GREATEST BUILDING ON EARTH. Look at it — Gothic pinnacles, horseshoe arches, Byzantine bits, EGYPTIAN bits, all on one corner of Calle Martí! Francisco Guasch Ferrer built this between 1909 and 1914. Doctor. Poet. NATURALIST. Designed it himself, from styles he'd seen on his travels, and raised the whole thing with TWO masons. TWO! First reinforced-concrete building in all of Cuba, baby! Since 1977 it's been the Tranquilino Sandalio de Noda Museum of Natural Sciences. Museum of natural sciences. In a palace. I love this town. Is anyone else thirsty?

Teatro José Jacinto Milanés

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16g Tennis String Set: One of the OLDEST theatres in Cuba and I want to live in it! First built 1838, rebuilt 1845 in boards and tile — before that, listen, before that the roof was THATCHED GUANO. They upgraded from a grass hat to the most beautiful all-timber horseshoe in the Caribbean, 540 seats, every tier made of wood. On 28 November 1898 it stopped being the Teatro Lope de Vega and took the name of the Cuban poet José Jacinto Milanés. Fully restored in the early 2000s. NAMED AFTER A POET! Everything here is named after a poet! Round of applause, and then a round of something else.

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 16g Tennis String Set

Let me tell you what you have got here. Hyper-G is a co-polyester monofilament, shaped square instead of round, and this is the 16 gauge at 1.30mm — the thickest of the four sizes most shops actually stock, and the one that lasts. A set is 40 ft / 12.2 m, which strings one racquet; the same string comes on a 656 ft / 200 m reel if you are the sort who plans ahead.

In my day you strung one frame at a time and you made it count, which is the honest reason a set exists at all. Pinar del Río understands work that is done a single unit at a time.

The shape is the whole trick. Four milled faces mean the string grabs the ball rather than sliding off it, and at 1.30mm you get that grab without the string dying on you halfway through the second set. TruTension holds the bed steady through the opening hour, when a lesser string has already gone slack and started lying to you about where the ball is going.

Think of the torcedores at the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río, rolling by hand at the same benches all morning: the fiftieth cigar has to be the equal of the first, or the whole day was worthless.

Solinco runs this string across seven gauges, from 1.35mm at 15L all the way down to 1.05mm at 20g, and 16 sits where the durability still is. By the way, the lime green is not a gimmick — you can see exactly where the strings have moved, and moving strings are the first thing to tell you the tension is going.

You will get use out of it everywhere from the shaded arcades of Calle Martí in Pinar del Río to the red-earth banks of the Río Guamá at the edge of town, with the mogotes of the Sierra de los Órganos standing flat-topped on the horizon.
