Akmola Regional Museum of History and Local Lore
Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 20g Tennis String Reel: Come in out of that wind, sweetheart. This museum was founded in 1920, one of the oldest in all of Kazakhstan — my neighbour's cousin catalogued pots in a place like this for thirty years and never once stopped for lunch, and I told her about it every week. It sits in a historic building right in the centre and holds tens of thousands of items: archaeological finds of the steppe cultures, Kazakh yurts and costume and horse gear, the town's founding as a Russian outpost in 1824, the Soviet era, independence. The natural history of all this lake and granite country as well. Have you eaten? There's no rush.

Church of the Holy Archangel Michael
Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 20g Tennis String Reel: This one is old, my love. Late nineteenth century, built of wood in the traditional manner with its domes and its bell tower, put up for the Orthodox community of a town founded in 1824 as a Cossack and administrative settlement of the Russian Empire here on the Kokshetau uplands. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. It came through the Soviet decades, when religious life was suppressed and churches across Kazakhstan were closed or demolished, and it was restored to worship as religious freedom returned. Today it serves as a cathedral church for the Orthodox faithful of the Akmola Region. Button your coat.

Nauan Hazrat Mosque
Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 20g Tennis String Reel: Look at the two of them standing there together, the big one and the little one. The complex carries the name of Nauan Hazret — the renowned Kazakh imam and religious scholar Nauryzbai Talasov, who led the town's Muslim community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and was persecuted for defending Kazakh religious education. The large modern brick mosque with its four minarets is classical Islamic style, and beside it stands the small wooden mosque of the late nineteenth century, the oldest in Kokshetau, where he himself served. It was a centre of learning for the Kazakhs of the steppe, and its madrasa taught notable figures of the era. Old and new side by side, the way a family ought to be.

Lake Kopa
Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 20g Tennis String Reel: Walk along here with me, slowly, there's no prize for finishing first. Lake Kopa lies right against the northwestern edge of the city, so Kokshetau meets the water along this embankment promenade. It is shallow, several kilometres across, fed by the Chaglinka and the Kylshakty, and it has shaped the place since its founding in 1824 at the foot of the uplands — water, fishing, a natural boundary. The name comes from a Kazakh word for that silty, shallow character. Reedbeds and waterbirds, strolling and ice sports in winter, and the granite hills of the Kokshetau massif behind, the gateway to the Burabay lakes. Eat something before the cold sets in.
I know the part. Hyper-G is a co-polyester monofilament, milled square rather than round, and this is 20 gauge — 1.05mm, the slimmest of the seven Solinco makes, which begin at 1.35mm in 15L. The reel is 656 ft / 200 m; a set is 40 ft / 12.2 m. Nobody buys a reel of 20 gauge by accident, and nobody who buys one is surprised by how often they are back at the machine.
Kokshetau was founded in 1824 as a Cossack outpost under the granite hills, and it has spent two centuries being the town people pass through on the way to Burabay.
The edges are the whole performance. At 1.05mm there is very little material between you and the ball, so the corners dig in hard and the spin comes off it in a way no thicker gauge can match. It is not comfortable. It was never going to be. TruTension holds the bed through the opening hour, which matters enormously at this diameter because there is not much held in reserve.
You will get use out of this everywhere from the lakeside promenade along Lake Kopa in Kokshetau to the granite outcrops and pines of Bukpa Hill at the town's edge, where the city's name stands in freestanding letters on the slope.
And while you are in town, the Akmola regional museum in Kokshetau was founded in 1920 and is one of the oldest in Kazakhstan — yurts, horse gear, archaeology from the steppe cultures, all of it kept carefully by people nobody has ever heard of. That is a whole discipline, doing the work without the spotlight. So is a 1.05mm string.
It will not last as long as the thicker gauges, but for the hours it has, it does not miss a cue.
