Chnyrrakh Fortress

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 16g Tennis String Reel: Oh, the grass has taken the parapets. Founded by order of the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia, dated 1 August 1855 — five years after the Russian post at the mouth of the Amur — and built for one purpose: to close this river to foreign warships while Anglo-French squadrons prowled the North Pacific in the Crimean War years. A fortress is only ever a man saying: not this, not mine, not while I stand here. Four batteries in two lines — Aleksandrovskaya on Cape Chnyrrakh and Mikhailovskaya on Cape Meo outermost, Nikolaevskaya on Cape Kuegda and Konstantinovskaya on the shoal behind. Rebuilt and re-armed into the twentieth century. Partly destroyed in May and June 1920.

Monument to Gennady Nevelskoy

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 16g Tennis String Reel: He is standing exactly where he would want to be — facing his river. Gennady Ivanovich Nevelskoy commanded the expedition that raised the Russian flag at the mouth of the Amur on 1 August 1850, and the Nikolaevsky Post he founded that day became this town. His voyages proved the Amur navigable from the sea and Sakhalin an island, not a peninsula. Both were disputed. He was right, and being right decided Russian policy in the whole Far East. There is a particular kind of love in insisting a thing is true when everyone senior to you says otherwise. The monument stands in the City Park, the town's chief marker of its own beginning.

The Amur embankment at Nikolayevsk

Several kilometres of grey-brown water, and this is the Amur's last reach before the Liman and the Sea of Okhotsk — the river's final open sentence before the sea takes it. The town was founded as a seaport and that was its whole meaning: from 1856 the administrative centre of the Primorskaya Oblast and Russia's main Pacific port, until Vladivostok took the role after 1871 and Nikolayevsk quietly declined. A place that was chosen, then unchosen. And for roughly half of every year the ice closes it entirely, which has shaped how everything and everyone has arrived here since 1850. It waits. That is what it does.

V. E. Rozov Museum of Local Lore

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 16g Tennis String Reel: A bakery. They gave the museum a former bakery, by decision of the Lower Amur regional executive committee dated 14 April 1944 — a town in the middle of a war deciding that memory needed a room. I find that unbearably moving. Inside, the collections run from archaeology through the founding of the post in 1850 and on into the twentieth century, and the ethnographic section holds clothing, wood carving and household equipment of the Nivkh, Nanai and Ulch peoples, who lived along the lower Amur long before Russian settlement and live in the district still. Two storeys on Sovetskaya Street, keeping everything anyone here ever loved.
