Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G Round 16g Tennis String Reel: A bakery. They gave the museum a former bakery, by decision of the Lower Amur regional executive committee dated 14 April 1944 — a town in the middle of a war deciding that memory needed a room. I find that unbearably moving. Inside, the collections run from archaeology through the founding of the post in 1850 and on into the twentieth century, and the ethnographic section holds clothing, wood carving and household equipment of the Nivkh, Nanai and Ulch peoples, who lived along the lower Amur long before Russian settlement and live in the district still. Two storeys on Sovetskaya Street, keeping everything anyone here ever loved.
Pull up a bucket. Quiet now — not because the fish care, but because I do. The Solinco Hyper-G Round 16g reel is the string for people like me: patient, steady, in it for the long season. It's Solinco's famous Hyper Green co-polyester — same celebrated material, same unmistakable color — but with a round profile instead of the square edges. Round means smooth.
Smooth means the string slides and snaps back clean, sends the ball on a flatter, more penetrating line, and wears steady as lake ice in January. More drive than dive, as they say. Suits me.
Specs, short and true, the way I like conversation: 16 gauge, 1.30mm, the durable one. Medium-firm, low-powered — control you can sit with all day. Tension maintenance is impressive; drill your holes in the morning and they're still good at dusk. And it's a reel: 656 feet, 200 meters, sixteen-plus string jobs. Stock up once, like firewood.
My shack sits off Nikolayevsk-on-Amur, Russia, near the mouth of the great Amur where the river meets the Sea of Okhotsk — ice-bound roughly half the year, which around here we call fishing season. You'll use this string in every weather this town offers, from a July hit by the embankment to indoor sessions when the river locks up.
It is also perfect for the short bright Amur summer, when the whole town remembers it owns rackets and everybody plays at once. Afterwards, warm up like a local: hot tea, smoked fish, and no unnecessary talking.
