Kuru Art Project

Solinco Heaven Strings Revolution 16L Tennis String Set: Operating in D'Kar since 1990, supporting contemporary San artists of the Kalahari — and if you want to know what a sky like this does to an imagination, look at the paintings. Working in a village studio with oils, acrylics and printmaking equipment, the Naro San painters developed a distinctive style of bold colour and free composition drawing on hunting scenes, animals, veld plants and dreams. Exhibited internationally and widely collected, it is one of the best-known indigenous art initiatives in southern Africa, and it provides participating artists with an independent income in a region where the transition from hunting and gathering to farm labour left many San marginalised. A gallery sells original works, and D'Kar hosts the Kuru Dance Festival each August.

Gantsi Craft

Solinco Heaven Strings Revolution 16L Tennis String Set: Founded in 1983 as a non-profit marketing channel for San craft producers scattered across the remote settlements of the district — and remote out here means sand track and a sky that decides everything about your week. The shop buys ostrich-eggshell jewellery, tanned leatherwork, hunting sets and beadwork directly from hundreds of rural producers, providing one of the few sources of cash income in outlying Kalahari communities, and sells to travellers passing on the Trans-Kalahari corridor. The eggshell bead-drilling and hide-preparation techniques long predate the town itself. It remains a fixture of Ghanzi's small commercial centre and a practical monument to the district's San heritage.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Solinco Heaven Strings Revolution 16L Tennis String Set: NOW we are talking. Roughly 52,800 square kilometres of Kalahari sandveld, one of the largest protected areas in Africa, proclaimed in 1961 in part to protect the lands of the San hunter-gatherers who had lived in the region for millennia. And its best-known feature is Deception Valley — a fossil river valley, a river that stopped being a river — where the seasonal rains pull in herds of springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest, with Kalahari black-maned lions, cheetahs and brown hyenas following them in. The whole spectacle is triggered by rain and nothing else. Ghanzi is the principal gateway town for the western side, supplying fuel and provisions before the long sand tracks. Scale and remoteness made it an icon of the Botswana wilderness.

Revolution is Solinco's hexagonal co-polyester monofilament, and 16L is the gauge most people should actually be buying: 1.25 millimetres, supplied as a single 40 foot (12.2 metre) set, one racquet's worth.

Six flat faces rather than a round profile, so there are six edges gripping the ball, and because the spin from a poly comes as much from the mains sliding across each other and snapping back as from the bite, a shaped string at 1.25 mm is the sensible middle of the range — enough grip to be a genuine spin string, enough diameter to survive a season.

It is a firm string, as every Solinco poly is, but it is one of the softer ones in their own range, and in playtesting it has scored 8 out of 10 for control, 8 for durability and 8 for spin, with 7 apiece for playability, power and comfort — which is a string that is unusually honest about what it is.

Playtesters also reported a surprisingly low level of vibration and a mild response on off-centre hits despite a high stiffness reading. Step up from 18 gauge and you trade a little bite and launch angle for real string life. If you break strings, this is your gauge.

Ghanzi sits at 1,420 metres in the middle of the Kalahari and gets around 375 millimetres of rain in a year, with a record high of 42.2°C and a record low of −8.5°C, which is a temperature range that eats string.

You will get use out of this everywhere from a baking hard court in the Kalahari to an indoor hall in a European winter, and by the way — this is cattle country that supplies about three-quarters of Botswana's beef exports, so a string that lasts is a string that gets you through an entire afternoon of seswaa and argument without a single restring in between.
