Construction began on 11 November 1897 and the bridge opened in 1900, carrying the railway across the Godavari and completing the rail link down the entire east coast — a link, I would point out, that people simply assume happened. It was named after Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock, then Governor of Madras. I know the type. It served a full century and was decommissioned in 1997 when the Godavari Arch Bridge replaced it, and it is preserved now as a disused heritage structure. Disused, and still worth looking at. Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage and Museum, Dowleswaram
