Palace of the Nakhchivan Khans

Built for Kalbali Khan Kangarli, father of Ehsan Khan — and Ehsan was the last khan of Nakhchivan, which tells you how the file closes before you have opened it. It was the residence of the rulers of the Nakhchivan Khanate from the mid-eighteenth century until the early twentieth. Restored and reopened in 2010 as the Khan Palace State History and Architecture Museum. Around two thousand items inside: archival documents, photographs, maps, weapons, dress of the khanate. Two thousand pieces of evidence and no crime. I looked at every one of them anyway.

Nakhchivan Buzkhana (the ice house)

It is one of the largest surviving ice-houses in Azerbaijan, and the scholars split clean down the middle: some place it in the early fourteenth century, others in the reign of Shah Abbas in the seventeenth. Three hundred years apart. Somebody is wrong and nobody will say who. Here is what the structure itself tells you: ice cut in winter went in beneath that vault, and the mass of brick plus the underground floor held it through the summer heat of the Araxes valley. It works either way, which is exactly why the date refuses to settle. Restored in 2013.

Duzdag salt mine

Duzdag is among the oldest known salt workings in the world, with archaeological evidence of extraction going back several thousand years, and salt from this mountain supplied the Araxes valley throughout antiquity — which explains the wealth, and wealth explains most of what later happens to a town. Then the trail turns somewhere I did not expect: from 1979 the disused galleries were converted into a speleotherapy centre treating asthma and bronchitis in the stable, dust-free, salt-laden air. The Duzdag Physiotherapy Centre still operates inside the mountain. Same rock. Different business entirely.

Nakhchivan Fortress (Köhnəqala)

Pre-medieval in origin, a stronghold of the Sassanid period, and it commanded the caravan road running along the Araxes valley between the Iranian plateau and Anatolia — the route on which both the wealth of Nakhchivan and its repeated destruction depended. Same road, both directions. Everything valuable came past this hill, and so did everyone who wanted it. It remained the defensive core of the town through the medieval period. Case closed, and I do not much like the answer.

Headlamps ON, everybody — we're going in. What you're holding is the Solinco Tour Bite Soft 16L, and like all my favorite things, its best qualities are below the surface. Externally: a co-polyester monofilament, 1.25 millimeters, square profile, four edges. Descend a level: those edges grip the ball like good boots on wet limestone, generating serious topspin with firm control.

Down another level: the SOFT formulation — this is Tour Bite with the harshness dissolved away, like a cave stream smoothing rock. Gentler on the arm, longer ball pocketing, more feel, and the 16L gauge adds extra bite over the standard 16. Power's kept low, tension holds steady in the deep. One 40-foot set rigs one racquet. Check your knots. I always check my knots.

Now — the cave system I'm REALLY excited about. This string is based in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, and the headline attraction is underground, obviously: Duzdag, one of the oldest known salt workings on Earth, mined for thousands of years.

And here's the part that makes my helmet light flicker: since 1979 the disused galleries have operated as a speleotherapy center, where people breathe the stable, dust-free, salt-laden air to treat asthma. A cave that HEALS you. I've been in caves that tried very hard to do the opposite.

You'll use this string everywhere from a morning hit under the fortress walls to an evening session as the Araxes valley cools, and by the way, the local custom of tea with mountain herbs afterward is strongly endorsed by this guide.
