Solinco Mach-10 16g Tennis String Set

This five-sided co-poly claims to be soft AND to hold tension, which is exactly the sort of assertion I distrust — and then, irritatingly, it delivers. Before a rouble changes hands it proposes a walk round Orsk, and invites you to verify every word of it.

Preobrazhenskaya Hill and the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour

Solinco Mach-10 16g Tennis String Set: Okay, the light up here is unreal. Gold domes, white church, steppe running forever behind it — this is giving frontier main character. Ivan Kirilov's expedition reached this hill in August 1735 on the feast of the Transfiguration and founded a fortress on it, originally named Orenburg. Then the Orenburg fortress was re-established further down the river, so this one was renamed Orsk in 1739. A full rebrand. Of a city. In 1739. And a Transfiguration church has stood on this summit since the fortress was founded. Are you getting this? Get the domes in frame, we go again.

Gora Polkovnik (Polkovnik Hill)

Solinco Mach-10 16g Tennis String Set: Stop. STOP. The broken rock is scarlet, green, yellow and cream and that is not an edit, that is jasper. Polkovnik Hill holds the largest and most celebrated jasper deposit in the Urals, and before the Second World War as much as 300 tonnes a year came out of it. Orsk jasper from this exact slope was worked into pieces held by major museums, including two vases in the Hermitage. The Hermitage. From here. The hill is named for N. V. Balk, an officer who ran the state stud farm nearby from 1900 and later made colonel, polkovnik. Flat lay of the chips, natural light, go.

The Old Town of Orsk (Stary Gorod)

Solinco Mach-10 16g Tennis String Set: This whole quarter is a set and nobody is using it. Carved wooden eaves, shutters, low nineteenth-century merchant houses on the slope, and the open floodplain keeps the tall industrial districts right back in the shot, so it reads as a small town stranded beside a big one. This is the original Orsk, grown out of the 1735 fortress, still holding the plan and building stock of a Cossack and merchant frontier town. It stood on the trade route out toward the Kazakh steppe and Central Asia and was the commercial heart until Soviet industrialisation moved the city away from the river. Golden hour here. Trust me.

The Ural River at Orsk

Solinco Mach-10 16g Tennis String Set: Content of the trip, and I need someone to hold the phone. The Ural is conventionally taken as part of the line dividing Europe from Asia, and Orsk is built on both banks, so this city is in two continents at once and I can be in both of them in a single frame. It was called the Yaik until 1775, when Catherine II ordered it renamed the Ural after the Pugachev rebellion. The fortress that became Orsk was founded on this bank in 1735. Willow scrub, flat horizon, enormous sky. Two continents, one post. Nobody is doing it like this river.

Solinco Mach-10 16g Tennis String Set

Written for this world alone.

Let us take the claims one at a time, because there are several and they are large.

Claim one: Mach-10 is a co-polyester. That checks out — co-polyester monofilament, Solinco's newest, and this set is the 16 gauge, 1.30mm, the thickest gauge they make it in. Thickest gauge means most durability and most control; that is not opinion, that is cross-section.

Claim two: it is shaped. Also true, and specifically it is five-sided — a pentagonal profile, the same grippy shape family as Hyper-G, Tour Bite and Confidential. Five edges instead of a smooth round barrel means the crosses bite the ball rather than skate over it. Verifiable by touch. Run a thumb down it.

Claim three, and this is where I usually reach for a source: CloudFORM. It is a chemical formulation, and the stated benefit is that Mach-10 plays soft — more power, more comfort — without the tension collapse that soft co-polys are notorious for. Now, ‘soft poly that holds tension’ is the single most over-claimed sentence in stringing, so I read the reviews rather than the box.

The reviewers describe it as a softer, five-sided poly delivering power and spin with a consistent stringbed response. Fine. I concede the point. Gracefully.

The set is 40 ft / 12.2 m and it is blue, which needs no verification whatsoever.

A string that asks to be interrogated and survives it belongs in Orsk — a town that will tell you it stands on the border of two continents and then, when pressed, produces the river.

You will get through this set everywhere from a hard court under Preobrazhenskaya Hill to an indoor floor in Orenburg, two hundred kilometres down the Ural — and it is also perfect for an afternoon out on Gora Polkovnik, where the claims about the jasper turn out, irritatingly, to be true as well.
