It is the principal Orthodox church of Comrat and of Gagauzia, its founding credited to the priest Feodosie Marunevici, though historians are divided on whether it was begun in 1820 or 1840, which is twenty years of uncertainty and nobody kept the receipt. Under Soviet rule churches across Moldova were closed and this one was no exception: from 1961 the building held a museum collection rather than services. It was returned to worship after the Soviet period. And note the combination: the Gagauz are Turkic-speaking and Eastern Orthodox, which makes this cathedral unusual among Turkic peoples. Snack, anyone? I have plenty.

Solinco Whiteout 305 V2 Tennis Racquet: Founding a university is the ultimate act of preparedness and I respect it enormously. Comrat State University was founded on 11 February 1991 by decision of the Russian Education Foundation, at the height of the Gagauz autonomy movement, and in 2002 it was made a state university by resolution of the Government of Moldova. It teaches in Gagauz, Romanian and Russian, and it exists largely because the Gagauz wanted higher education in their own language, which is a supply problem of the most fundamental kind: if the words are not stocked, nothing else gets built. Its creation ran alongside the politics of the moment, since in August 1990 Comrat had declared itself an autonomous republic, a claim Chisinau rejected as unconstitutional.

From 1989 to 1995 Comrat was the capital of the self-proclaimed and unrecognised Gagauz Republic. On 23 December 1994 the Moldovan parliament passed the Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia, which took effect on 14 January 1995.

Comrat sits on the Ialpug in southern Moldova, and the settlement appears as Cumrad on F. W. Bauer's map of Moldova in 1775. In 1819 the Russian government issued a decree resettling the region, and Gagauz and Bulgarian families who had migrated north from Bulgaria were established here, people who packed everything they owned and moved it hundreds of kilometres, which is a standard of preparation I can only aspire to. Comrat was granted the status of a town in 1926 and adopted its official seal on 30 September 1932. The surrounding steppe is vine country, and the river valley carries most of the older streets.
