Church of St Michael the Archangel, Knjaževac

Tecnifibre Black Code 16g Tennis String Reel: I came here for weather and I have been given an arboretum, so let me at least tell it properly. The church was built in 1887 on the initiative of Prince Nikola of Montenegro, and the Vasojevići, the tribe of this region, built it collectively: every household pledged to carry one block of stone to the site. Every one of those trips made in whatever the sky was doing that day. The trees went in the same year and the grounds now hold more than thirty species, in a park called Knjaževac, the Prince's place. The town grew round an earlier church, Andrijevina, destroyed by the Ottomans in 1765; in 1858 the duke Miljan Vukov declared the region part of Montenegro.

The Komovi massif and the Štavna katun

The Komovi are the massif that defines Andrijevica, their eastern and southeastern slopes falling within the municipality and toward the Lim valley — and a massif is a weather factory, because everything that arrives here hits that first. Štavna is the katun, the seasonal high pasture settlement at the foot of Kom Vasojevićki, about an hour from town, long used for summer grazing by the Vasojevići. Summer, note. Nobody takes the herds up there for the other seasons, and the reason is the sky. It is the standard approach to Kom Kučki, the highest of the three peaks. Protected nature park. Bring a jacket you actually believe in.

Trešnjevik Pass

Tecnifibre Black Code 16g Tennis String Reel: A pass. My favourite kind of place, because a pass is where the weather has to squeeze through. Trešnjevik carries the road west out of Andrijevica across the divide toward Kolašin and lies on the boundary between the two municipalities. It is the principal land approach to the Komovi from the north and — hold onto this part — the gateway between two river basins: the Lim, which drains north toward the Drina, and the Tara. Rain falling a few metres apart up here ends up in different rivers, in different valleys, for the rest of its life. That is a divide. I have chased far less, far further.

The Lim River at Andrijevica

Tecnifibre Black Code 16g Tennis String Reel: The town sits on a terrace about 40 metres above the Lim, and I would like you to think about why anybody builds forty metres up rather than down by the water. Rivers rise. That is the entire answer. Andrijevica stands at the junction of the routes through the eastern Montenegrin mountains, and the Lim corridor was the historic trade road linking the Raška and Zeta regions; a medieval fortification called Grace stood roughly a kilometre from the present town, placed to control it. Archaeological work in the neighbouring Berane basin has recovered Neolithic, Illyrian and Roman material. People have been sitting safely above this water for a very long time.

Black Code in 16 gauge — 1.28 mm — on a 660 ft / 200 m reel, which is roughly twenty racquets from a single spool. It is a co-polyester monofilament with a pentagonal cross-section: five flat faces and five edges, Tecnifibre's first geometric string, and the edges are the whole idea.

They catch the ball as it crosses the bed and send it out with more rotation than it arrived with. 16 is the thickest of the three gauges, which makes it the durable one, and on a reel that matters more than it does in a packet.

THERMOCORE sits over the top of it, reducing string-on-string friction. Three consequences, all of them practical: the mains snap back into alignment instead of staying where the last ball pushed them, the string pulls through a frame more easily when you are the one at the machine, and the bed outlasts what five sharp edges would otherwise allow.

Tecnifibre recommend 22 to 25 kg with a 32 kg ceiling, and they aim the line at heavy string-breakers putting in ten hours a week and more.

Andrijevica is a small town in the Montenegrin mountains and a good place to think about what durability is actually for. It sits at 740 metres where the Zlorečica runs into the Lim, ringed by the Komovi, Bjelasica and Prokletije massifs.

Its church was raised in 1887 as the first Orthodox sanctuary built in this region after Ottoman rule, deliberately modelled on the main church at Morača monastery — a copy made on purpose, because continuity was the point. Twenty racquets off one spool is a modest version of the same idea.

You will get through this reel everywhere from a hard court under the Komovi to an indoor hall in Podgorica two hours down the Lim valley — and by the way, it belongs to a place that measures the year by the mountain: the herders go up to the high pastures under Kučki Kom in summer, and everything, including you, comes back down when the weather says so.
