Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS Tennis Racquet

This schoolmaster of a frame — 110 in² of forgiveness, 260 grams, X-Damp calm in every stride — builds confidence the way a good instructor builds a rider: patiently, honestly. But lessons begin at the mounting block: a four-fence tour of Saumur, château to Cadre Noir, before you take the reins. Heels down. Walk on.

Saumur, France
01
cardio tennis clinics Flagler Village — Château de Saumur in Saumur, A white tufa-stone castle with four pointed corner towers and steep slate roofs, standing on a bluff above the Loire river and the rooftops of Saumur
Stop one

Château de Saumur

Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS Tennis Racquet: First, the stone: that is tuffeau, the soft white limestone of the Loire, laid down under a shallow chalk sea, easy to cut and quick to weather, which is why this whole valley glows. Also, swifts, dozens of them, round the towers. Right, the humans. Fortified since the tenth century, the present fairy-tale silhouette largely the work of Louis I, Duke of Anjou, who rebuilt it in the later fourteenth century, and it appears in the September miniature of the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, painted around 1410. Under the Protestant governor Philippe Duplessis-Mornay it became a stronghold of French Protestantism, later a prison and arms depot, including under Napoleon. The town bought it in 1906. Municipal museum now.

Stop two

Cadre Noir – École Nationale d'Équitation

Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS Tennis Racquet: Horses, and I could talk about the animal all afternoon, but the point here is what people have made of it. Saumur has been France's cavalry city since a school for mounted troops was established in 1815, and the Cadre Noir, its elite corps of instructors, takes its name from the black uniforms worn since the nineteenth century. In 1972 the École Nationale d'Équitation was created at Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent on the edge of town with the Cadre Noir as its teaching core, training France's top instructors and riders and presenting public galas of academic horsemanship. UNESCO inscribed equitation in the French tradition, as maintained here, in 2011. Grass-fed animals, incidentally, and this is very good grass country.

03
cardio tennis clinics Flagler Village — Église Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers in Saumur, A riverside pilgrimage church crowned by a massive round rotunda dome, standing at the eastern edge of Saumur along the south bank of the Loire
Stop three

Église Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers

Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS Tennis Racquet: It begins, as these things generally do, with water. A healing spring, and a venerated image of the Pietà found nearby in the sixteenth century, and out of that grew one of the great Marian pilgrimage sites of seventeenth-century France. Springs do this everywhere; the geology decides where people kneel. The Oratorians took charge of the sanctuary in 1614 and built it into a major religious centre, and the monumental domed rotunda, financed in that same century, dominates the riverside approach to Saumur. At the height of its fame it drew tens of thousands of pilgrims a year, royalty among them. Damaged by bombardment in 1940 during the German invasion and since restored, it is one of the finest Baroque monuments in the Loire valley.

04
cardio tennis clinics Flagler Village — Musée des Blindés in Saumur, A large exhibition-hall museum on the edge of Saumur filled with ranks of tanks and armored vehicles from many nations, one of the largest such collections in the world
Stop four

Musée des Blindés

Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS Tennis Racquet: Machinery, in a valley full of vines, and I would frankly rather be in that hedgerow. Still. The museum was founded in 1977 from the study collection of the French armour school, heir to the city's long cavalry tradition after the cavalry mechanised in the twentieth century. It holds on the order of 800 armoured vehicles from France, Germany, Britain, the United States, Russia and other nations, spanning the First World War to the present, a substantial number kept in running order, including rare German vehicles of the Second World War among the finest preserved anywhere. Each summer the Carrousel de Saumur has historic tanks manoeuvring publicly alongside the riders of the Cadre Noir. Horse and engine, one field.

The Saumur, France track

Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS Tennis Racquet

Written for this world alone.

Heels down, eyes up, and stop strangling the grip — the racquet can feel your nerves, same as a horse. Now. This is the Tecnifibre Fire 260 OS, and I chose it for you the way I choose a first horse: forgiving, generous, and honest. Head size: 110 square inches — a proper oversize, which means a sweet spot the size of a paddock. Off-center hit?

The frame forgives you and says nothing. Weight: 260 grams unstrung, about 285 strung — light enough to swing all lesson without your arm going sour.

String pattern 16×19 for easy lift and spin, balance one point head light, and Tecnifibre's X-Damp system — a steel mass in the butt cap on elastomer supports — filtering out harsh vibration the way a good saddle filters a rough trot. Power comes up willingly. You provide calm, consistent technique. The racquet provides confidence.

That is the correct division of labor in ANY partnership.

And we school in the right town for it: Saumur, France, the cavalry city of the Loire. Since 1815 this town has trained France's riders, and its Cadre Noir — the elite instructors in black, teaching at the national riding school since 1972 — are quite simply the finest seat-and-hands people alive.

What they teach is what I teach and what this racquet embodies: lightness, patience, partnership over force. You'll ride this frame everywhere from a morning hit below the château to an afternoon lesson along the Loire, and by the way, a post-lesson glass of Saumur's own sparkling wine is a tradition I refuse to reform. Now — walk on.

The tour runs four fences, all rideable, none optional.
