Puente Nuevo

It links the old Moorish town, La Ciudad, on one side to the Mercadillo, the newer quarter, on the other, and it took some forty years to build, and it was completed in 1793, and fifty workmen died building it. Fifty. So maybe don't do the whole amazing-view thing right here. The architect was Martín de Aldehuela, who also built Ronda's bullring. Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda

Construction began in 1780 and was completed in 1785, same architect as the bridge, and it's the oldest purpose-built bullring in Spain — which, whatever anyone thinks about bullfighting, is just a fact, and it sort of sits there being one. It belongs to the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda, a noble equestrian order, so, horses, but with paperwork. Every September it's the setting for the Feria Goyesca, held in honour of Pedro Romero, the Ronda matador who lived from 1754 to 1839 and whose era Goya recorded in his bullfighting etchings. So Goya drew this place. Anyway. I didn't look that up. I just knew it.

Baños Árabes de Ronda

They're beside the Arroyo de las Culebras in the lower town, right at the point where travellers entered Ronda across the old bridge, so they could purify themselves before going up into the city. You washed before you were allowed to be in town. Ruthless. They're generally dated to the late eleventh or twelfth to fourteenth centuries, when Ronda was an important stronghold of al-Andalus, and they still preserve the cold, warm and hot rooms of the hammam plus the hydraulic system — the water tower and wheel that raised water from the stream. Best-preserved Arab baths on the whole Iberian peninsula. I'm not excited. I'm just saying.

Palacio de Mondragón

It stands on the site of the residence of the Moorish ruler Abomelic, son of the king of Morocco, and it's the finest surviving domestic complex in Ronda's old town. Then it got substantially altered after the Christian conquest, and the first works were ordered by Ferdinand and Isabella, who actually stayed here in the 1490s — so it's a house somebody moved into and immediately redecorated, which is extremely relatable. The outer building enclosing the courtyards is eighteenth century. It's the municipal museum of Ronda now. …I've been talking a lot. Forget it.

Everything I do professionally descends from that arena, at a considerable distance and with more running.

Aldehuela also built the Puente Nuevo, spanning the Tajo gorge some ninety-eight metres deep, completed in 1793 after around forty years of work. The Baños Árabes sit beside the Arroyo de las Culebras where travellers entered across the old bridge, so they could clean up before going up into the city. And the Palacio de Mondragón stands on the site of the residence of the Moorish ruler Abomelic.
