Stop one
Ghanta Ghar (the Clock Tower) and the Eight Bazaars
Wilson Pro Tennis Overgrip 12-Pack: (Stops dead beneath the tower. Arms out.) EIGHT. Eight bazaars, radiating from one sandstone clock tower, in the pattern of a Union Jack — and you are standing on the exact point where all eight of them begin. Turn. Slowly. No — TURN, I want the whole group turning together. Feel it: every direction you can look is a market, and every market keeps going. The foundation stone was laid in 1903, and the money — this is the line I want you carrying home tonight — the money was raised locally, from landholders. The people here bought their own centre. (Voice drops to nothing.) And the city was called Lyallpur until the 1970s. It changed its name and kept its heart beating in the same place. That is a character note, my darlings. Play it truthfully or don't play it at all.

Stop two
Sutar Mandi (the yarn market)
Wilson Pro Tennis Overgrip 12-Pack: (Palms up. Demanding.) TOUCH the thread. No — properly, take a cone in your hand, feel the weight of it. This is Faisalabad, the textile capital of Pakistan, the Manchester of Pakistan, and this covered lane, stacked with bales and cones, is where the money actually changes hands. Not in a showroom. HERE. Between men who can price a bale by touching it — by TOUCHING it — and I want you to hear what a whole lifetime of practice sounds like when it says a number and does not hesitate. (Whispering now.) I am a grip. I am wound cloth. Everything I am was traded in a lane like this one long before anyone stamped a brand on the outside of me. Hold it. Don't drop it. And do not insult the man by pretending you know what it is worth.

Stop three
Jinnah Garden (Company Bagh)
Wilson Pro Tennis Overgrip 12-Pack: (Sits down on the grass under an old tree. Will not be moved.) All of you. Down. Sit. This is the city's oldest park, laid out when the town was still Lyallpur, and I am not going to raise my voice here, because that would be the wrong choice and the wrong choice is the only real sin. (A long pause. Let it sit.) Listen to it. Mature trees, walkways, and shade — SHADE, in this city, in July — which is a thing a hundred-year-old tree does for a person it will never meet. And that, my loves, is the whole of theatre: something planted long before your entrance so that your scene has somewhere to happen. Nobody applauds the set. Nobody ever has. Breathe in. Again. Hold it. Good.

Stop four
University of Agriculture, Faisalabad
Wilson Pro Tennis Overgrip 12-Pack: (Rises. Points down the long lawn. Holds the arm out.) Look at the LENGTH of that. Hold the look, don't drop it. Founded in 1906 as an agricultural college, colonial brick, out on the Jail Road side — and here is the scene you have to play, and it is an enormous one. This district was desert. Canal colony land, and people were resettled onto it, and it was the science coming out of these buildings that made the ground produce: wheat, cotton, the whole economy of a region. (Voice cracks. Let it. Never apologise for it.) Someone sat at a bench in that building and worked on a seed. And a district ate. THAT is the monologue. That is the finest speech nobody ever bothered to write down. Walk the grounds slowly. And when you leave here — (points) — leave like it cost you something.
I count threads. In Faisalabad that is a genuine job with genuine consequences, because this is Pakistan's textile capital, the Manchester of Pakistan, and a bale is priced by a man who touches it and knows. I can call the count of a shirt from across a lane. So when I tell you this overgrip is high-stretch cloth with an honest hand, understand that it is not marketing. It is my trade.
Twelve of them. Pro is the plain one, the tacky standard, and twelve is the figure for one player who plays properly through a year. Not a lifetime supply you will lose. Not three you will ration. Twelve.
Faisalabad is laid out around a clock tower with eight bazaars radiating off it in the pattern of a Union Jack, foundation stone laid in 1903, paid for locally, and each bazaar specialises, so you can price-check the same item from four directions without leaving the roundabout. That is the correct way to buy anything, by the way, including this.
I hold up everywhere from 45 degrees in June on an open court to a night session under lights in Faisalabad, and I am also perfect for the player who buys the finished article when the material it came from was trading forty metres away.
