The museum was founded in 1961, first in a house on Ion Creangă Street, on land now buried under the Central Park, and it moved in 1966 into this building, raised in 1920 as the first headquarters of the Petroșani mining joint-stock company. Seven halls, several thousand items: original documents, sketches, working tools, mining equipment, miners' clothing. All of it a great fuss about one substance, and the substance is the interesting part. Coal is a forest that lay down and was never allowed to rot. Buried, pressed, kept. The Jiu Valley is a fossil swamp with a museum built on top of it. The overalls are genuinely moving. But the seam is the exhibit.

Now. Petroșani was founded in the 17th century and became the principal town and cultural centre of the upper Jiu Valley coalfield. Yes, fine, people. The surviving historic core holds the former Employees' Casino, the Prince Mircea Dispensary, and the Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity standing alongside the Roman Catholic church, two confessions side by side, which reflects the mixed population the coalfield drew in from across the region. Which is ordinary behaviour, really. A resource appears, a population arrives from everywhere, and it nests in close quarters and builds slightly different structures for the same purpose. Rooks manage the same thing with fewer bricks and no paperwork.

University of Petroșani

But: the university was established in Petroșani in 1948 and is the successor of the Institute of Mines, which had operated in Bucharest for over eighty years and relocated here from the 1957-58 academic year. It made this small mountain town one of the most prominent centres of mining education in Romania and, for a time, in Europe. Which is to say the rock summoned the scholars, not the other way round. Nothing about this valley recommends a university except what is underneath it. Everything here, the colonnade included, is a growth response to a substrate. Petroșani lies at the northern foot of the Parâng range, on a tributary of the Jiu, in the depression between the Parâng to the south and the Vâlcan and Retezat mountains to the west. Parângul Mare stands at 2,519 metres and is among the highest peaks in Romania. Forest on the lower slopes, then the treeline, then alpine grass and bare rock and weather that arrives without consulting anybody. Small, willing, and stronger than it looks — I have spent my life with animals like that, and the Ultra 100L V5 is one. It is the light version of Wilson's power frame: a 100 sq in head, 280 g / 9.88 oz unstrung and 296 g strung, 27 in long, with a 16×19 pattern and a dual taper beam running 24 to 26.5 mm.

The Mining Museum was founded in 1961 and moved in 1966 into a building raised in 1920 as the first headquarters of the Petroșani mining joint-stock company; several thousand items inside across seven halls, and every one of them explains the valley.

The historic centre, founded in the seventeenth century, holds the former Employees' Casino, the Prince Mircea Dispensary and the Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity beside the Roman Catholic church — two confessions on one street, which is what a coalfield does to a town.

The University of Petroșani was established in 1948, successor to the Institute of Mines that had run in Bucharest for over eighty years and relocated here from 1957-58, making a small mountain town a serious centre of mining education. And above it all the Parâng range, with Parângul Mare at 2,519 metres among the highest peaks in Romania.

It will work everywhere from a floodlit court down on the valley floor at Petroșani to an indoor hall an hour off in Deva, and it tires in neither.
