It has no opinion on the surface you booked. Power Cushion+, Hyper MSLite, Durable Skin Light, 275 g on a 24.5 cm last, in white and grey, dark green, smoke pink or black mocha grey — and it is my first week, so we begin at Safi, which I have read about extensively and seen not at all.

Safi, Morocco
01
Fort Lauderdale intermediate tennis clinic — Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes at Ksar el-Bahr, the Portuguese sea fort built into the water, Safi
Stop one

Ksar el-Bahr, a Portuguese sea fort built out onto the water in the 1500s

Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes: Okay so my notes say this is a fort 'built out onto the water' in the 1500s — which I first read as 'built underwater,' and I was SO ready to talk about scuba history, but no, it literally extends over the sea on a promontory, which is honestly just as cool?? The Portuguese constructed Ksar el-Bahr in the sixteenth century and it still stands there being dramatic about it.

02
Fort Lauderdale intermediate tennis clinic — Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes at the Portuguese cathedral with its Gothic choir still standing, Safi
Stop two

the Portuguese cathedral, its Gothic choir left standing

Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes: I mis-read my notes and thought the 'Gothic choir' meant there was literally a choir group that was Gothic — like, capes, the whole thing — but it's actually the architectural choir, the apse section of the cathedral, which is the part that survived and is still standing today! Gothic architecture in Morocco! I was not prepared for that and I'm thriving!

03
Fort Lauderdale intermediate tennis clinic — Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes at the Kechla fortress above the medina, home of the National Ceramics Museum, Safi
Stop three

the Kechla above the medina, the National Ceramics Museum inside

Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes: The Kechla sits above the medina — I originally wrote 'Ketchup' in my notes, corrected it, wrote 'Keshla,' corrected it again, but the point is it's a fortress and the National Ceramics Museum is INSIDE it, which means you get battlements AND glazed pottery in one visit, which is a sentence I never thought I'd say but here we are and I'm obsessed.

04
Fort Lauderdale intermediate tennis clinic — Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes at the Colline des Potiers with its historic kilns, Safi
Stop four

the Colline des Potiers, kilns listed as a monument since 1920

Yonex Power Cushion Sonicage Women's Tennis Shoes: The Colline des Potiers — Potter's Hill — has kilns that have been listed as a historic monument since 1920, which means these kilns got official monument status before a LOT of countries even had widespread electricity, and I think that deserves more fanfare than people are giving it right now! The hill is still active, real potters, real fire, totally real monument status since nineteen-twenty, I checked twice.

Written for this world alone.

Right — hello — sorry, let me start properly. This is the Sonicage, in the women's all-court version, and I have the notes here so I am going to get this right. Power Cushion+ in the midsole: that is the cushioning that absorbs impact and returns some of the energy into your next step.

Hyper MSLite: that is the lightweight midsole material — sorry, midsole, not outsole, that was my mistake and it matters. A rounded sole so the foot rolls through the step smoothly. Power Graphite Sheet for support, Toe Assist Shape at the front, Double Raschel Mesh for breathability.

Durable Skin Light on the upper for abrasion resistance.

Standard fit, around 275 grams in a 24.5 centimetre, all-court outsole. Four colourways: white and grey, dark green, smoke pink, and black mocha grey.

And the useful thing — the thing I genuinely did not know two weeks ago — is what "all-court" means in practice. It means the outsole is a compromise, deliberately: durable enough for hard courts, patterned well enough to work on other surfaces, and not optimised entirely for either.

If you play on one surface only, a specialist shoe will beat it there.

If you play on whatever is free that evening, like most people, this is the one that works every time. That is not a downgrade. I asked. It is the point.

Safi is where we are going and I have been reading about it all week, which I am aware is very obvious. It is a working Atlantic port — sardines, a huge fishing fleet — and it is also the pottery city of Morocco. There is a whole hillside of kilns, the Colline des Potiers, which has been a listed monument since 1920, and the smoke comes up out of the ground from the firings.

And there is a Portuguese sea fort built right out onto the water in the 1500s. A fort in the sea. I had to check that twice. It is genuinely a fort in the sea.

The outsole is a compromise on purpose. I did not know that a fortnight ago and now I tell everybody.
