The domed old quarter around Sidi Salem
Dunlop Stage 1 Green Tennis Ball Can: They call it the City of a Thousand Domes. The name is not poetry. Almost every roof here is a shallow dome of local brick. There is no timber in the Souf, so there are no beams. Where there are no beams, a man does not build flat. And the dome sheds the intense Saharan heat, so the room beneath it stays cool. The bricks are made from local gypsum-rich material, bound with the sand itself. The desert withheld wood, so the desert was used instead. Stand on the higher ground at Sidi Salem and the whole pattern appears at once. Look a while. There is no hurry.
El Oued is the City of a Thousand Domes for a structural reason: no timber in the Souf spans a flat roof, so builders worked in clay brick and local gypsum and arched the load instead. Same instinct as this ball. It is an ITF-approved Stage 1 green, and it is not a small ball — 6.30 to 6.86 cm across, the width of the yellow one already in your bag.
The change is internal: around 25% less compression, so it travels roughly 25% slower.
Numbers, since they are the entire product. ITF Stage 1 rebound sits at 120–135 cm where a standard Type 2 ball gives 135–147 cm, and mass runs 47.0–51.5 g against 56.0–59.4 g. Three balls to a can, each carrying the solid green dot the ITF specifies at 15 to 25 mm.
The felt is rated for repeated basket feeding rather than one match — the same economy as the ghouts outside town, dug by hand in the fifteenth century and still growing Deglet Nour with no pump in the system.
Nothing else is reduced. Stage 1 is played on the standard 23.77 m court, over a 91.4 cm net, with a normal 27-inch racquet, for ages 8 to 12 and adults starting late. Only the energy comes out, which is why a beginner in El Oued gets a rally instead of a scramble. You'll get use out of this everywhere from El Oued to Algiers.
And by the way, it's also perfect for the alley football Algerians genuinely love — El Oued's lanes are gypsum-walled on both sides, and at 25% compression this comes off a wall without taking the wall with it.
