Salisbury Cathedral

2XU Core Compression Men's Tights: Sorry — is this alright? I can stop. It's only that the cathedral was begun in 1220, on a completely fresh site Bishop Richard Poore chose after the see was moved down from Old Sarum, and the main body was finished in 1258, which is why the whole thing matches, which I've always found rather — sorry. The spire was added afterwards. It's 123 metres, or 404 feet, and it has been the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom since 1561, which I only mention because — no. And there's a mechanical clock from 1386, among the oldest in Britain, and one of the four surviving originals of the 1215 Magna Carta in the octagonal Chapter House. That's everything. I'll stop.

It's just that it's the last survivor of the several market crosses Salisbury used to have, and each of them marked the part of the market where a particular trade was carried on, and this was the one where poultry was sold. So. Poultry. A cross has been recorded on this spot from the early fourteenth century, and the hexagonal structure you're looking at is fifteenth-century, with the flying buttresses and the upper stage restored in the mid-nineteenth. Mompesson House

It was built in 1701 for Charles Mompesson, and people come for the plasterwork, which I'm assured is very fine, and the period furnishings, which are also — sorry, I'm doing it again. It's in the care of the National Trust. Old Sarum

2XU Core Compression Men's Tights: Last one, I promise, and then you're free of me. Old Sarum was occupied from prehistoric times, later fortified and made the Norman city of Sarum, with a royal castle and the first cathedral of the diocese, which I realise is a great deal of history for one hill and I am rushing it, sorry. In 1218 Bishop Richard Poore abandoned the cathedral up here and moved the see down to the banks of the Avon, where the present Salisbury Cathedral was begun in 1220. And then the old city on the hill was gradually deserted as the new town grew below it. Sorry. I find that part a little sad. Thank you for listening.

These are 2XU's entry point into graduated compression: full-length men's tights in the brand's PWX fabric, 72% nylon and 28% elastane, circular-knitted so the pressure is consistent all the way round the leg rather than banded.

The compression is graduated and covers abductors, glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves — the point being to hold the muscle still under repeated impact so less of your afternoon is spent absorbing vibration.

The build is not uniform front to back, which is the detail worth knowing. The front panels are a lightweight 70-denier fabric; the back panels go up to 105 denier for supportive multidirectional stretch where the leg actually loads.

Flatlock seams to keep chafing down, high-filament yarns that wick and dry quickly, Polygiene antibacterial treatment to keep the odour out of them, UPF 50+ against the sun, and a wide covered-elastic waistband of about 1.38 inches with a drawstring so they stay where you left them.

This is a city built on cold, wet water meadows — the old city walked away from a windy hilltop at Old Sarum in the thirteenth century and put its cathedral down in the flood plain instead, where the Avon runs and the mist sits. Warming up in February under a 123-metre spire is a genuine argument for a layer that does something.

Which makes them a Salisbury garment, frankly.

You will get use out of them everywhere from a raw morning in the Cathedral Close to a hard indoor court back home. And by the way, they are ideal for the Tuesday and Saturday market: charter markets have run in that square since 1227, and the queue for the cheese stall is not short.
