A fire in 1828 burned for seven days and took everything wooden, which in a palace is to say everything. What survives is the plinth and the gates. Seven days to depreciate a capital asset from magnificent to floor plan. Now look at the spikes on the Delhi gate, set at exactly the height of a war elephant's forehead. That is the line item I admire: somebody costed out the cheapest possible answer to an elephant and the answer was iron spikes at the right height, not a thicker gate. Preventative spend. Always cheaper. Nobody ever budgets for the fire.

Aga Khan Palace
Danish Endurance Crew Socks: Built 1892, and note what the commissioning actually records, because it changes the entry entirely: Aga Khan the Third had it constructed as famine relief employment. The arches, the verandahs, the gardens, all of it is a wage bill made visible. Money went out, food came in, and the receipt is a palace. That is the best return I will show you all day. Fifty years later the same building served as a place of internment, from 1942 to 1944. Kasturba Gandhi died here in 1944, as did Mahadev Desai, and both are memorialised in the grounds. I am not going to put a figure on that page. Some things belong in the ledger without a number beside them. Walk through the gardens slowly.

Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute
Danish Endurance Crew Socks: Founded 1917, and here is a project I would have flagged in the first quarter and been completely wrong about. Beginning in 1919 the scholars here set out to produce a critical edition of the Mahabharata. To do it they collated over a thousand manuscripts from across the subcontinent, comparing line against line, variant against variant, to reconstruct what could be established. Completion: 1966. Forty-seven years. Nineteen volumes. That is an overrun measured in careers, a project that outlived the people who approved it, with no revenue line anywhere on it and nothing to sell at the end but certainty. I have spent my professional existence despairing at overruns. This is the one I would sign again tomorrow. Forty-seven years. Worth it. Do not ask me to justify that, I already have.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple
Danish Endurance Crew Socks: Eighth century, Rashtrakuta period, and the costing here is unlike anything else on this tour, because this temple was not built, it was excavated. Carved out of a single basalt outcrop, working downward and inward. Materials budget: nothing. You purchase no stone, you haul no stone, you simply remove what is already there. Wonderful. And then the catch, which is total: every cut is permanent. No corrections, no substitutions, no returning a bad batch. One slip and the asset is impaired forever. And it was abandoned before completion, so look at the far wall where the chisels stopped mid-stroke. That is the exact moment the funding, or the will, or the dynasty stopped. Sunk cost, twelve centuries old, still sitting there unrecovered. Lower your voice near it.
