Kenroku-en Garden

Kanazawa Castle

The wealthiest. I do gravitate. Fire kept humbling it: a lightning strike burned the keep in 1602 and no one ever rebuilt it, and a major blaze came again in 1881. The Ishikawa-mon gate of 1788 survives as an original, facing Kenroku-en. The white roof tiles contain lead, the storehouse walls wear namako lattice plaster, and timber-frame reconstruction of turrets and storehouses in traditional joinery began in 2001. A public park now. A fortunate park.

Higashi Chaya District

Geisha entertained with music and dance in two-storey wooden houses behind those finely slatted kimusuko lattices, built by people who understood an entrance. The Shima teahouse of 1820 keeps its original guest rooms and instruments and is an Important Cultural Property of Japan; the Kaikaro still operates. It came through the twentieth century largely intact because Kanazawa was not bombed in the Second World War, and it is now a national preservation district. Luck, taste, and my presence, all on one street.

Myoryu-ji (Ninja Temple)

A Nichiren temple raised in 1643 on the orders of Maeda Toshitsune, third lord of Kaga. Shogunate regulations restricted fortifications, so he built a disguised defensive outpost guarding the approach to Kanazawa. Two storeys from outside. Inside: four storeys in seven layers, twenty-three rooms, twenty-nine staircases, concealed doors, a pitfall trap staircase, hidden escape routes, a lookout tower. No actual ninja were ever involved; the nickname comes purely from the architecture, which is the kind of reputation one earns by sheer style. Active temple, guided tour only.
