Stop one
Swaminarayan Akshardham
Babolat Men's SFX Evo All Court Men's Tennis Shoes: Pink sandstone — about 6,000 tonnes of it, quarried in Rajasthan — and I could talk about the stone far longer than about the building, because that is sediment, laid down grain by grain in an ancient basin and lifted up for us to carve. The complex was inaugurated on 30 October 1992 by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and is dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, 1781 to 1830. The central mandir was raised by traditional load-bearing temple construction, without structural steel, which means the stone is doing precisely what stone does in a cliff face. It stands among landscaped gardens and exhibition halls and is the most-visited monument in Gujarat. Stay for dusk and watch the gardens. The birds come in then, and they are louder than any of us.

Stop two
Adalaj Stepwell (Adalaj ni Vav)
Babolat Men's SFX Evo All Court Men's Tennis Shoes: Now this is my sort of monument, because it is really a piece of hydrogeology with carving on it. Completed in 1499 and associated with Queen Rudabai, a stepwell of this kind was built to give a village year-round access to groundwater and a cool place to gather through the hot season. Walk down and feel the temperature drop as you go: that is the thermal mass of the earth, free of charge, working today exactly as it worked in 1499. The carving is Indo-Islamic — leaves, flowers, birds, fish and geometric ornament across the walls and pillars — reflecting the Hindu and Islamic traditions meeting in Gujarat at the end of the fifteenth century. Birds and fish, note. Carved by people who watched the same water we are standing over.

Stop three
Indroda Nature Park
Babolat Men's SFX Evo All Court Men's Tennis Shoes: Eggs. Fossil dinosaur eggs, one of the world's largest concentrations of them, the park commonly described as the second largest dinosaur egg hatchery in the world, following the fossil discoveries made across this part of Gujarat. Do consider what that actually is: a nesting ground. Animals returned to this specific patch of earth to lay, season after season, generation after generation. That is behaviour, fossilised — far rarer than bones. The park is run by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research Foundation and combines the fossil park with a zoo, botanical collections and a science education centre. I shall be in the botanical section. Come and find me when you have finished with the humans.

Stop four
Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan (the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha)
Babolat Men's SFX Evo All Court Men's Tennis Shoes: Human history then, briefly, since you insist. When Gujarat was separated from Bombay State it had no capital of its own, so a new one was planned through the 1960s across some 57 square kilometres beside the Sabarmati, laid out on a grid of numbered sectors and named for Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhinagar was established as the state capital in 1970, with the Secretariat and the legislature placed together at the centre in Sector 10, and Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan, which houses the Legislative Assembly, was completed in 1982. A grid of numbered sectors, beside a river. Note which of those two was here first, and which of them will still be here when the numbering has stopped meaning anything.

One does not often find a shoe that solves the problem of the wide foot without announcing it in the ugliest possible way, and yet here we are. The SFX Evo All Court is built on a forefoot 6% wider than Babolat's standard last, which is a small number that changes the entire afternoon. The OrthoLite insole beneath it is 20% thicker than the insole Babolat normally supplies.
Thicker underfoot, wider across — that is the whole thesis, and it is a civilised one.

Underneath is a Michelin Performance outsole, and one may as well say plainly that this is the reason to buy the thing.
It is a modified herringbone with more of its surface actually touching the court than a conventional tread, and the rubber compound is laid denser in the regions that wear first. All-court, so it will not object to hard, clay or carpet.
Gandhinagar is a city laid out on a numbered sector grid with tree-lined avenues running dead straight for kilometres, and it is quite the most agreeable place in India to discover how much tread you have left.

The upper mesh is 100% recycled polyester, which in a city carrying roughly 54% green cover across its land area and calls itself India's tree capital feels less like marketing and more like manners.
A heavy-duty rubber guard wraps the inner forefoot and the toes, which is where a dragging back foot destroys most shoes and where nobody thinks to look until it is too late.

You will get use out of this everywhere from the sandstone forecourt at Akshardham to the stairs of the Adalaj stepwell, which descend five storeys and are worn smooth by five hundred years of feet.
And by the way — it is perfect for Navratri, when Gujarat dances garba for nine consecutive nights and the whole state stays up.
Nine nights of lateral movement on a hard floor is a more brutal test than most people's tennis, and a wide forefoot with a thick insole is the only sensible way to survive it.

Breeding, in a shoe, is simply this: it does what it says and does not shout. Sizes run the full men's range.
