This is the residence of the traditional ruler of the Gourmantché, whose chieftaincy is centred on this town; the Gourma kingdom was one of the significant precolonial states of the region, and its ruler retains ceremonial authority alongside the modern administration — receiving visitors, arbitrating disputes, presiding over customary festivals. Study the arrangement, because it is the oldest arrangement there is: one power holds the paperwork, the other holds the legitimacy, each quietly needing the other and neither ever saying so out loud. The compound follows the Sahelian pattern, an outer reception space where petitioners wait in the shade and private quarters behind, with court musicians and praise singers on formal occasions. Praise singers. Every court in recorded history has kept somebody on the payroll whose entire job is to confirm that it went magnificently.

Cathédrale Saint-Joseph
Babolat Pure Drive Spectra Limited Edition Tennis Bag: Seat of the Roman Catholic diocese covering the eastern region of Burkina Faso — and here I am obliged to do the thing I least enjoy, which is concede a point. Catholic missions were established in the colonial period and built schools, clinics and parishes across the Gourma country, and the diocese was erected later with its cathedral in the regional capital. The empire that shipped the missions out here is long gone. The schools and the clinics opened anyway and are open still. That is not nothing, and I am not going to pretend otherwise simply because it inconveniences my mood. The building itself is simple and functional, the plain rendered style used for mission churches across the Sahel, adapted to the heat with high windows and deep eaves — no ambition whatsoever to overawe anybody, which for that century counts as a moral achievement. It serves a substantial congregation and anchors church schools, health work and the cultural life of the town's Christian community.

Marché Central de Fada N'Gourma

The central market is the commercial hub of eastern Burkina Faso and the actual reason the town grew as it did, sitting on the road that runs east from Ouagadougou toward Niger — geography and freight, not destiny. Traders bring millet, sorghum, peanuts, shea nuts and butter, dried fish, livestock, cloth, hardware and imported goods, and buyers come in from villages across the Gourma. A separate livestock market works the edge of town, busiest in the early morning when cattle, sheep and goats change hands. Palaces and cathedrals get the photograph. The place that decides whether anyone eats this week is this one, and nobody has ever built it a monument.
