Nizamabad, India
01
cardio tennis in 33323 — Nizamabad Fort in Nizamabad, A hilltop fort with battlemented stone walls and gateways enclosing a whitewashed temple with corridors and pillared halls, overlooking the city of Nizamabad
Stop one

Nizamabad Fort

Dunlop SX Performance Tennis Backpack: Look at the sky. LOOK at it. Now look at what we are standing on — a bare hillock with nothing between us and the horizon, which is precisely why the Rashtrakuta kings fortified this height in the tenth century and precisely why I would like to be up here at four in the afternoon in June. After the Rashtrakutas the fronts kept rolling through: the Kakatiyas, the Bahmani sultans, the Qutb Shahis of Golconda, and finally the Nizams of Hyderabad, who left their name on the town on their way past. Inside the walls stands the Jagannath temple, also called Quilla Ramalayam, dedicated to Rama, its construction associated by local tradition with the Maratha leader Shivaji; pilgrims fill its corridors and pillared mandapa halls, sensibly, because those halls have roofs. And the panorama: the entire city, open sky, no shelter in any direction. Nizamabad's principal historic monument, and the finest seat in the district for watching something awful arrive.

02
cardio tennis in 33323 — Kanteshwar Temple in Nizamabad, An ancient stone temple with a stepped tower in the North Indian style, standing in a walled compound in the Kanteshwar quarter of Nizamabad
Stop two

Kanteshwar Temple

Dunlop SX Performance Tennis Backpack: A temple to Shiva. The destroyer. I would like you to know I did not pick this stop for that reason, and I would like you to know that I am lying. Tradition gives the foundation to Satakarni II, a ruler of the Satavahana dynasty that ran the Deccan around the beginning of the common era, though the structure standing here reflects later medieval rebuilding — which is simply what happens to anything left outdoors for two thousand years, and I mean that as a compliment to the weather. The stepped tower is unusual in this region for its northern, Nagara-style influence: a style that blew in from somewhere else and settled, like ash off a distant system. And the crowds are biggest at Rathasaptami, the festival of the SUN GOD, celebrated with processions every year. A sun festival. At the destroyer's house. Somebody in this district is scheduling the elements on purpose and I have never respected a calendar more.

03
cardio tennis in 33323 — Alisagar Reservoir in Nizamabad, A broad irrigation lake held by an earthen bund amid low hills, fringed by terraced gardens, an island, and old waterworks structures from the Nizam era
Stop three

Alisagar Reservoir

Dunlop SX Performance Tennis Backpack: At last — a structure built to catch a storm deliberately. Alisagar Reservoir lies about thirteen kilometres from the city and was constructed in 1931, in the reign of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, as part of the princely state's irrigation programme that dragged the dry Telangana countryside into the wet century. The lake, named for Ali, takes the entire MONSOON — a whole season's violence, arriving all at once — holds it, and releases it again as farmland. It is still a working reservoir, which means it is still winning. Then, because princes cannot help themselves, ornamental gardens were laid around it, said to have been inspired by the terraced pleasure grounds of northern India, with a summer house on the island and, later, a deer park. Deer. Directly downhill of stored floodwater. It is the favourite excursion in Nizamabad: picnicking on the lid of a controlled deluge.

04
cardio tennis in 33323 — Nizamabad Archaeological Museum, Tilak Garden in Nizamabad, A small museum in a colonial-era garden pavilion in central Nizamabad, its galleries displaying prehistoric tools, sculptures, bronzes, and arms
Stop four

Nizamabad Archaeological Museum, Tilak Garden

Dunlop SX Performance Tennis Backpack: Indoors. I go indoors for two reasons, and one of them is lightning. The District Archaeological Museum stands in Tilak Garden, a public garden named for the nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and opened in 2001 in a heritage building of the Nizam period. What is inside is everything the centuries dropped before the weather could finish the job: Palaeolithic and Neolithic stone tools, megalithic burial goods, medieval Hindu and Jain sculptures recovered from village sites, bronzes, arms and coins running from the Satavahana dynasty all the way down to the Asaf Jahis. The galleries of archaeology, sculpture and decorative arts explain how the Godavari valley was passed through by every great power the Deccan ever produced, one after another, like a season of fronts. Everything left outside scatters eventually. This is the one room where it stopped scattering. Take the hint. Also take a coat.

The Nizamabad, India track

Dunlop SX Performance Tennis Backpack

Written for this world alone.

Come, come, sit — best seat in Nizamabad, no extra charge! I drive this city twenty years, and I tell you straight: the Dunlop SX Performance Tennis Backpack is transport done PROPERLY. Dedicated racquet compartment in front — VIP seating, frames ride snug, no bouncing. Main compartment, plenty of room — kit, towel, whatever you carry, it fits, don't worry.

Separate compartment for shoes — very important, sir, the smell rides in the back, away from the passengers. Pockets for bottle, phone, grips — everything within reach, like my horn. Padded shoulder straps, smooth ride over every pothole, and the SX black-and-yellow — same colors as my auto! Both hands free. In my business, that is luxury.

Now hold on, we go — full city tour, meter is off, this one is my pleasure! Up there, tenth-century fort on the hill, built by the Rashtrakutas and after that — Kakatiyas, Bahmanis, Qutb Shahis, Nizams — everybody took a turn, like passengers, in and out, in and out.

That side, Kanteshwar Temple — two thousand years of tradition, sir, from Satavahana times; we slow down, we respect. Then scenic route, Alisagar Reservoir — 1931, built under the last Nizam, gardens, island, very beautiful, good breeze for tennis also. Last stop Tilak Garden, the museum.

And you will use this bag everywhere from that fort road up there to a hard court in Hyderabad, sir — and by the way, it is also perfect for carrying home Nizamabad turmeric from the market, big bags, bright yellow, same colour as my auto, and the shoe compartment keeps the whole business well away from your kit. Okay, we reached! You take the bag, I take a chai. Good price.
