Bangkok's subsoil is soft alluvial clay — it settles, it creeps, and it will happily swallow anything heavy you set on it. So this mound, built in the early Rattanakosin period here on the Thonburi side, is a rockery deliberately made irregular and light in places, imitating a candle drip, with small shrines up on top. And the great white chedi beside it spreads its load the same way: wide at the base, tapering as it rises, weight kept low and everything above it lighter. Which, since you ask, is precisely how you are taught to stand for a return of serve, and I stood like that for nineteen years and my knees have opinions about it now. Anyway. Wide base. Look at the chedi.

Santa Cruz Church, Kudi Chin
Head Graphene XT Speed MP Tennis Racquet: King Taksin granted this riverbank ground to Portuguese-descended Catholics around 1770, when Thonburi was the capital, because he wanted the trade and the gunnery skills — you take the players who improve the squad and never mind where they came from. The first two churches on the site were timber, and timber in this heat and this humidity is not a building, it is a maintenance schedule; something fails every season. The present pink and cream masonry church with the dome and the Italianate tower dates from the 1910s, which is when they finally stopped patching and built properly. And the Kudi Chin neighbourhood still bakes a Portuguese-derived cake. I would have killed for that cake in training. We were not allowed cake. Twelve years, no cake.

Wat Kalayanamit

Somebody commissions an enormous seated Buddha image — and enormous is the operative word — so the hall has to be raised around it and above it, because you are never getting that through a door afterwards. Founded in 1825 and given to the king, sitting right at the river junction on the Thonburi side where the Chinese junks used to moor, with a great bronze bell as well. Note the height of that hall, the thickness of the walls, the whole building shaped by the single thing inside it. You build the game around your one great shot and everything else exists to set it up. In my case that was the forehand. Sorry — the statue. The statue dictated the building. Correct order of operations, that.
Timing, darling. That is the whole act. You can have the voice of an angel, and if you come in half a beat behind the piano the room forgives you exactly once. Bangkok knows about arriving on time: over on the Thonburi bank there is a bastion sited precisely where a canal mouth meets a bend in the river, so one gun position covers traffic in two directions. That is not luck. That is phrasing.
