My entire job is getting through a gap that is closing, and everything depends on how much you can feel. Head RIP Control 18g is 1.20 mm, the finest gauge, and it is built from multifilament nylon combined with polyolefine ribbons — comfort and control together — with textured wraps that grip the ball and help generate spin.
At the thin gauge that texture bites harder and the snapback is faster, which means more spin and more information, in exchange for a shorter life. One 12-metre set, one racquet.
Bhopal, then. Keep up, and mind the steps.
We begin at the Taj-ul-Masajid, an enormous pink mosque with two tall white-domed minarets over a courtyard you could lose a crowd in. Construction began in the nineteenth century under Shah Jahan Begum, one of Bhopal's ruling Begums, and stopped dead when the funds ran out. Then it sat unfinished. For generations.
It was finally completed in the 1980s, more than a hundred years late, which is a load I have some feeling for.
Then the Gohar Mahal down beside the Upper Lake, stone and timber in mixed Mughal and Rajput style, raised in 1820 by Qudsia Begum. Here is the record that stands: Bhopal was ruled by women in succession for over a century — four Begums, mother to daughter, running the state, building the city and negotiating with an empire.
Then the Upper Lake itself, the Bhojtal, which is not natural. Tradition credits it to Raja Bhoj in the eleventh century, dammed across a valley, and the city has drunk from it ever since. A thousand years of water supply out of one decision and one piece of engineering, carried into place by men whose names nobody wrote down. There is a long bridge across it and a statue of Bhoj at one end.
And we finish forty-five kilometres north-east at the Great Stupa of Sanchi, hemispherical, from the time of Ashoka in the third century BC, its four elaborately carved stone gateways added later. The whole site was then forgotten, overgrown and lost for centuries until a British officer noticed it again in 1818, and early diggers made an awful mess of it before proper restoration arrived.
You will carry this set everywhere from a hard court beside the Upper Lake to an indoor hall in Indore two hours west, and by the way, it is also perfect for a plate of Bhopali seekh kebab off the old city lanes, eaten standing up, which is the only way anybody eats on a working day.
