Batha River at Ati

Wilson Intrigue Pro Women's Tennis Shoes: Best-value water in central Chad, and it costs nothing at all. Ati stands on the banks of the Batha, one of Africa's great seasonal rivers and the namesake of the surrounding region. For most of the year it is a broad bed of sand where animals are watered from shallow wells — the free option, and it works — but in the summer rains it becomes a true river, flowing westward toward Lake Fitri and briefly transforming the Sahelian landscape. The town grew at this reliable crossing and watering point, and the river's annual return governs its rhythms: herders converge, gardens are planted on the wet banks, trade revives, and the town is said to come back to life. Centuries of settlement, all of it resting on the one asset nobody had to buy.

Grand Market of Ati

Wilson Intrigue Pro Women's Tennis Shoes: Now we are talking. The market of Ati is the commercial centre of the Batha region and one of the important livestock markets of central Chad, and its position is the entire trick: the town sits where the routes of Arab and Toubou pastoralists crossing the Sahel meet the east-west road from N'Djamena to Abéché. Market days draw camels, cattle, sheep and goats from an immense dry hinterland, along with grain, dates, dried fish from Lake Fitri and goods trucked in from the capital. That is caravan commerce still running — the trade that linked the Sahara, the sultanates of Ouaddaï and Bagirmi and the savanna lands south, long before colonial borders. Come early. It is the only advice I have and it is worth having.

Djoua Battlefield

Wilson Intrigue Pro Women's Tennis Shoes: Near Ati lies the site of the Battle of Djoua, fought in 1907, when French colonial forces and their local auxiliaries defeated an army of the Ouaddaï sultanate advancing into the Batha country. It was a decisive step in the French conquest of central Chad: the victory broke Ouaddaïan power west of Abéché and brought the Batha — until then contested ground between nomadic Arab groups and the neighbouring sultanates of Ouaddaï and Bagirmi — under effective French control. In the aftermath the French organised the region's administration, and Ati, at the strategic river crossing, grew into its administrative capital, a role it holds to this day. The battlefield itself remains open rangeland. What was settled there is why the town is where it is.

Lake Fitri

Wilson Intrigue Pro Women's Tennis Shoes: And this is the region's real asset, held quietly out in the hinterland. Lake Fitri, in the southwest of the Batha region, is a shallow lake fed by the seasonal Batha that endures even through dry years — a miniature of Lake Chad, and it does not fail. Its waters and reedbeds support fishing communities, huge flocks of migratory waterbirds and the herds of the surrounding pastoralists, and it is recognised internationally as a wetland of importance. On its shore stands the town of Yao, seat of the centuries-old sultanate of the Bilala people, whose rulers have governed the lake country since the upheavals of the medieval Kanem empire. An ancient sultanate and a lake that never quite dries: the historical and ecological anchor of everything administered from Ati.

The Ati, Chad track

Wilson Intrigue Pro Women's Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

Come closer. Feel this. Two layers of engineered mesh — sleek, breathable, and I am telling you honestly, it runs a touch long and a touch wide, which is not a flaw if you have a wider foot, it is a gift. Underneath: an Ortholite sockliner and a moulded foam midsole, plush the way a good saddle blanket is plush.

Below that, Duralast rubber in a wavy outsole pattern that grips every surface I have put it on. The Intrigue Pro is the sensible middle of Wilson's women's line — real comfort, real traction, no tour-level price.

Now. We begin at the Batha River, a broad bed of sand for most of the year where animals are watered from shallow wells, and a true westward-flowing river in the summer rains.

You are in Ati, and I know the ground here.

Then the Grand Market — the commercial heart of the Batha region, where the routes of Arab and Toubou herders meet the road from N'Djamena to Abéché, and camels, cattle, sheep and goats arrive from an immense distance. I have haggled here. So will you.

South of town is the Djoua battlefield, where in 1907 French colonial forces broke Ouaddaï power west of Abéché — a couple of sentences of history, and then we move, because the light is going. We finish at Lake Fitri, a shallow lake fed by that same seasonal Batha, a miniature Lake Chad alive with fishing communities and enormous flocks of migratory waterbirds.

You will wear these everywhere from a swept court in the capital to the sand of the Batha bed itself, and they are also perfect for a morning of haggling in the Grand Market, where you will be standing for four hours and pretending that was the plan.
