Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes

Trimmed because material was left out: MATRYX EVO woven only around the abrasion, cushioning kept deliberately spare, a shock-eating EVA wedge and a curved sole that rolls you forward. Praia is the round I am covering, and I promise not to fluff the lines.

Praia, Cape Verde
01
cardiovascular tennis Davie — Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes at Praca Alexandre Albuquerque under kapok and mango shade by the bandstand
Stop one

Praca Alexandre Albuquerque, kapok and mango shade over the bandstand at the Plateau's heart

Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes: I’m only the understudy guide, so please pretend the real one said this with a better hat: Praça Alexandre Albuquerque is the Plateau’s central square, where kapok and mango trees shade the bandstand like they’re on municipal payroll.

02

Stop two

the pink cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graca facing the square

Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes: The main guide would probably gesture grandly here; I’ll just point accurately and humbly at Nossa Senhora da Graça, Praia’s cathedral, facing Praça Alexandre Albuquerque in the Plateau district. Not flashy, except for the pink, which is doing plenty of the work.

03
cardiovascular tennis Davie — Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes near the Presidential Palace above the sea in Praia
Stop three

the Presidential Palace, a pale colonial mansion on the cliff edge above the sea

Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes: Substitute guide note, delivered with almost professional confidence: the Presidential Palace stands on the Plateau above the Atlantic and serves Cape Verde’s presidency. I was told not to look impressed, but the cliff-edge colonial mansion has ignored that instruction.

04
cardiovascular tennis Davie — Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes at the Sucupira market open-air stalls in Praia
Stop four

the Sucupira market, an open-air sprawl selling everything the country imports

Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes: I’m filling in, so my market expertise is technically provisional, but Sucupira is Praia’s big open-air market, packed with stalls selling clothing, household goods, electronics, and imported everything. If the official guide asks, I said that very quietly and correctly.

The Praia, Cape Verde track

Babolat Jet Mach 3 Women's Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

So — the regular guide would open with the Michelin sole, because that is the headline, and it is a good headline. I am going to open somewhere else, if that is all right, because I think the more interesting thing about the Jet Mach 3 is how little of it there is.

The upper is MATRYX EVO, and this is genuinely clever: it is a patented woven fabric with PAHT and aramid threads placed only in the specific areas that take the abrasion and need the hold. So instead of a shoe that is uniformly strong and therefore uniformly heavy, you get strength drawn on like a map.

Everywhere else, it is just light fabric.

The KPRSX system underneath gives you cushioning across the whole range of the game — hard landing, long slide, standing still between points — with a softer, shock-absorbing EVA foam through the heel. The heel rocker helps the foot roll from stopping into starting, which is most of what your feet actually do in a rally.

Babolat's Stability arch system holds the midfoot.

All-court, true to size, medium width. That is the shoe. It is fast, and it is fast because things were left out.

Praia, then, and I will keep this brief and let the city do it. Praca Alexandre Albuquerque first, kapok and mango trees shading the bandstand at the heart of the Plateau, which is the flat table of rock the old town sits on. The pink cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graca facing the square — pink, properly pink, and nobody apologises for it.

The Presidential Palace after that, a pale colonial mansion right on the cliff edge above the sea, which is either confidence or a very good architect. And the Sucupira market to finish, an open-air sprawl selling more or less everything the country imports, where the real business of the island happens while the official version happens up the hill.

“The official version is up on the Plateau. The actual one is down at Sucupira. Every country has both.”

Strength only where it is needed. I would have led with that. Sorry — the regular guide is back on Thursday.
