I love a shoe that stays. Everything else in a tennis bag is replaceable and knows it — strings fray, grips slick, balls go dead in a fortnight — but a shoe you trust becomes something you are almost sorry to retire. The Propulse Fury 3 is built to be that.
It is the support shoe: heavy-set, deeply held, made for a player whose footwork is aggressive and whose ankles have already had one conversation too many. It is not light and it does not sigh over lightness.
It offers something better, which is constancy.
The reworked sole is built for support with real shock absorption. The Power Belt is a wide strap embracing the midfoot, giving lateral hold and a fit close enough to feel deliberate. Between the midsole and that belt sits the S-Block, anchoring the foot down into the ground.
And the devotion is in the details.
KPRS-X-2 protects the entire heel with a softer EVA foam that takes the shock out of every landing. The 360 Degree Fit tongue is integrated into the shoe rather than flapping loose, so the foot is held all the way around. The Lace-In system hides the lacing beneath the upper so it is never abraded, and laces therefore stop breaking at the worst possible moment.
A Gen-Protect polyurethane finish covers the upper for comfort and life. Michelin Premium rubber underneath, guaranteed for six months of durability. Black/Blue, White/Dark Blue, Sunny Lime — and the house behind it opened in Lyon in 1875 and has loved one subject ever since.
Magdeburg is a city that lost nearly everything and kept building anyway, which I find almost unbearably moving. Its cathedral was the first Gothic church raised on German ground, with Otto the Great's tomb in the choir.
Beside the river stands the Grüne Zitadelle, Hundertwasser's pink block with actual trees planted in its windows, because he could not bear a straight line and would not pretend otherwise. And the Jahrtausendturm in the Elbauenpark spirals sixty metres of laminated wood past working experiments.
You will get use out of these everywhere from a wet spring afternoon on the Elbe path to a hard court back home in August, and by the way, they are also perfect for a long evening over Bördelandsuppe and a beer, which is the sort of meal that ends late and forgives you.
"Strings fray, grips slick, balls die in a fortnight. A shoe you trust is the only lasting relationship in the bag."
