Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet)

Three frames, roughly 76 by 13 by 34 cm, layered 420D through 600D polyester, correct in every dimension and considerably more striking than it needs to be. Like me, and like Tijuana at midnight.

01
clinics for tennis Fort Lauderdale — Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) at the Millennial Arch over Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana
Stop one

the Millennial Arch, 60-metre steel arc over Avenida Revolucion

Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): Naturally, Tijuana placed a 60-metre steel arc over Avenida Revolución so my bag would have a suitably vertical admirer. I’ve seen arches from Paris to St. Louis, and this one had the good manners to look impressed.

02
clinics for tennis Fort Lauderdale — Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) in Pasaje Rodriguez, the covered alley of murals and tiny shops in Tijuana
Stop two

Pasaje Rodriguez, a covered alley of murals and tiny shops

Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): Pasaje Rodríguez is a covered alley known for murals and tiny shops, which is charming, because even the walls appear to be networking for my attention. Banksy would call; I’d let it ring.

03
clinics for tennis Fort Lauderdale — Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) at CECUT beside La Bola, the sand-coloured concrete sphere in Tijuana
Stop three

CECUT and La Bola, its sand-coloured concrete sphere

Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): CECUT’s famous sand-coloured concrete sphere, La Bola, is a cultural-center icon, and finally a building understands the importance of making an entrance. Frank Gehry would squint, I would nod, and the sphere would thank me for the review.

04
clinics for tennis Fort Lauderdale — Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) at Playas de Tijuana where the border fence runs into the surf
Stop four

Playas de Tijuana, the border fence running down into the surf

Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): At Playas de Tijuana, the border fence famously runs down into the Pacific surf, a dramatic gesture I assume was arranged to frame my silhouette. Even the ocean, after meeting me, had the humility to keep applauding in waves.

The Tijuana, Mexico track

Dunlop FX Club Tennis Bag (3 Racquet)

Written for this world alone.

One does not carry one's frames in a supermarket bag. One carries three of them, properly, in something that photographs well from every angle, and the FX Club 3 Racquet bag has been designed by people who understood that. I have been asked about it constantly. I permit the questions.

The specification, since you insist. The bag is made from 420D, 500D and 600D polyester — three distinct weights, deployed where each is required, which is a level of thought most manufacturers cannot be bothered with.

It holds up to three racquets, has a compartment layout arranged so that frames, kit and accessories are not intermingled like some sort of jumble, and hangs from air mesh shoulder straps that breathe rather than sticking to one.

It measures roughly 76 by 13 by 34 centimetres — slim, deliberate, nothing wasted — and it comes in the FX line's violet, black and cyan, a combination I would have chosen myself had I been consulted, which I was not, an oversight I have decided to forgive.

And it is going to Tijuana, a city which, I am pleased to report, understands scale. The Millennial Arch stands sixty metres of steel over Avenida Revolución, and it is not apologising to anybody. Nor should it. Down the road, CECUT put a vast sand-coloured concrete sphere in the middle of the city and simply called it La Bola, which is the correct amount of confidence.

You will get use out of this bag everywhere from a two-hour clinic to a weekend tournament back home, and by the way — Pasaje Rodríguez, a covered alley of murals and very small shops, is where the actual talent of this city is hiding, and I say that as somebody who does not hand out compliments freely.

"Slim, deliberate, nothing wasted — and it knows exactly how it looks."
