Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet)

The load paths were redrawn at the seams that actually tear. Sixteen litres, 76 x 32 x 9 cm, 100% polyester, three racquets, reinforced through the handle straps with an adjustable shoulder carry system — and first it points at a submarine parked in the grass at Tolyatti.

Stop one

the Sakharov open-air technical museum in Tolyatti, tanks, locomotives and a submarine in the grass

Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): This is my kind of landscaping: tanks, locomotives, and the B-307 submarine parked outdoors like someone finally admitted steel is decorative. The bag’s job is simple—carry three racquets with fewer welds than a diesel-electric boat, which I reluctantly respect.

02
Croissant Park cardiovascular tennis clinics — Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) at the Transfiguration Cathedral in Tolyatti, beneath gold onion domes, chandeliers and icons
Stop two

the Transfiguration Cathedral, gold onion domes over chandeliers and icons

Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): The Transfiguration Cathedral is Russian Orthodox, with gilded onion domes doing excellent vertical drama above chandeliers and icons. I came for load paths, stayed because somebody clearly cared about symmetry and didn’t just slap a dome on a box.

03
Croissant Park cardiovascular tennis clinics — Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) at the Togliatti Local History Museum with archaeological finds and antique costume
Stop three

the Togliatti Local History Museum, archaeological finds and antique costume

Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): The Togliatti Local History Museum keeps archaeological finds and traditional costume, which is basically a materials archive with better stitching. I respect any institution that says, “Yes, the old seams matter,” because they do.

04
Croissant Park cardiovascular tennis clinics — Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet) at the Togliatti Art Museum with Soviet painting from the city collection
Stop four

the Togliatti Art Museum, Soviet painting held in the city collection

Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet): The Togliatti Art Museum holds works in the city collection, including Soviet painting, so I inspected the brushwork like it was surface coating on a bridge girder. Art people call it composition; I call it load distribution with feelings.

Head Base S Tennis Bag (3 Racquet)

Written for this world alone.

Let us start with the load case, because everything else follows from it. Three racquets, shoes, a change of clothes — that is what this bag is dimensioned for, and Head has given the number: sixteen litres, in a body measuring 76 by 32 by 9 centimetres, which is 30 by 12.6 by 6.5 inches. That is a slim section.

Slim sections are efficient in bending and terrible in torsion, which is why the interesting part of this bag is not the volume at all. It is the reinforced construction.

A racquet bag fails in one of two places, always: the handle attachment, or the point where the strap meets the body. Head reshaped this generation and added reinforcement for exactly that reason — stability and protection, in their words, which in mine means the load paths were redrawn so the stress goes into structure instead of into a seam. The handle straps are new.

The shoulder carry system is adjustable, so the moment arm sits where your back wants it rather than where the factory guessed. There is a front zip pocket for a phone, which is the only pocket a bag this size needs.

The shell is 100 per cent polyester.

Even the hangtag is recycled paper tied with hemp cord — a detail that has no structural function whatsoever, and I still respect a company that thought about the last five grams of the thing.

Tolyatti is a town that would understand this bag entirely. Out in the grass at the Sakharov open-air museum sit tanks, locomotives and an actual submarine — engineering left outdoors, in the weather, on purpose, so you can walk up and put your hand on the plate.

"A bag fails at the handle or at the strap. Everything else is upholstery."
