The quiet ones are the good ones. This is a duffle, not a tour bag, and on a night shift that distinction is the whole point: it opens flat, it sits down without falling over, and it does not need a wall to lean against. Six racquets go into the main compartment with room left for the rest of it, which is more than a duffle has any right to hold.
The make-up is 65 per cent nylon, 27 per cent polyester and 8 per cent polyurethane — nylon for the abrasion resistance, the coating for the weather — and inside there is a premium lining so the frames are not riding against bare seam tape. Two large side accessory pockets take everything that would otherwise be loose.
A separate shoe compartment keeps what you played in away from what you are going to play with, which is the single most underrated feature on any bag ever made. It measures 27.6 by 12.6 by 13.4 inches.
It was inspired, designed and tested by Roger Federer, and the Lawn Collection livery is the restrained end of that: it does not glow, it does not shout, and at eleven at night it just looks like luggage.
Corfu is a town best seen on my hours. The Liston arcade is lit and half empty, the campanile of Saint Spyridon holds the last of the light, and the Old Fortress on its two peaks stops being a monument and goes back to being a shape against the sky.
“A shoe compartment is not a luxury. It is the wall between two parts of your life.”
