Wilson Rush Lite 5 Men's Tennis Shoes

The same first step and the same planted landing, with the bulk taken out and no break-in at all. About ten colourways, one of them called tofu, and a running joke about Obninsk, which turned the world's first nuclear power station into a museum.

01
Fort Lauderdale evening cardiovascular tennis clinic — Wilson Rush Lite 5 shoes at the world's first nuclear power station, Obninsk
Stop one

the world's first nuclear power station, on the grid since June 1954 and now a museum

Wilson Rush Lite 5: Okay, so I brought my tennis shoes to the world's first nuclear power station — opened June 1954, now a museum — and I figured, hey, if anything is going to give my footwork a little extra energy, it's standing on ground zero of the atomic age. The plant powered up at a whopping five megawatts. Five. My serve generates more anxiety than that. … That one landed. I'll take it.

02
Fort Lauderdale evening cardiovascular tennis clinic — Wilson Rush Lite 5 shoes at the 310-metre meteorological mast, Obninsk
Stop two

the meteorological mast, three hundred and ten metres of lattice over the pines

Wilson Rush Lite 5: Three hundred and ten metres of lattice steel rising straight out of the pine forest — this thing is basically the Eiffel Tower if the Eiffel Tower decided to become a scientist. It's one of the tallest structures in Russia and has been measuring atmospheric conditions since the 1960s. I looked up at it in my Rush Lites and thought, yeah, these shoes have better grip than I have on this joke. Moving on.

03
Fort Lauderdale evening cardiovascular tennis clinic — Wilson Rush Lite 5 shoes at the Museum of the History of Obninsk
Stop three

the Museum of the History of Obninsk

Wilson Rush Lite 5: I walked into the Museum of the History of Obninsk — dedicated to preserving the story of this science city from its secret Cold War origins right up to today — in my Rush Lites, and the curator looked at my feet like I'd shown up to a physics lecture in clown shoes. Which, honestly, is the highest compliment these sneakers have ever received. The museum covers everything: nuclear physics, meteorology, the whole nerdy beautiful package. I fit in perfectly. I did not fit in at all.

04
Fort Lauderdale evening cardiovascular tennis clinic — Wilson Rush Lite 5 shoes at Belkino park with the ruined manor and Boris and Gleb church, Obninsk
Stop four

Belkino park, its ruined manor, cascade of ponds and the Boris and Gleb church of 1773

Wilson Rush Lite 5: Belkino park has a crumbling 18th-century manor, a cascade of ornamental ponds, and the Boris and Gleb church consecrated in 1773 — basically every ingredient for a Gothic novel except the fog, and Russia provided that too. I'm standing here in performance tennis shoes designed for hard courts, next to a church older than the United States, and I genuinely cannot tell if I'm underdressed or if I've finally found a venue that appreciates the drama of a lateral support system. The architecture is tragic and gorgeous. The shoes are holding up better than the manor. Architectural roast — boom.

The Obninsk, Russia track

Wilson Rush Lite 5 Men's Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

Folks, here is the joke the tennis shoe industry keeps telling: buy the stiffest, most reinforced, most aggressively engineered shoe on the wall, and then play in it twice a week for an hour. That is the setup. The Rush Lite 5 is the punchline, and the punchline is: what if the shoe fit you instead.

This is the streamlined Rush. It keeps the things the family is known for — the explosive first step, the stability when you plant, the comfort that is still there in the third set — and it strips out the bulk that a recreational or club player is carrying around for no return.

The fit is fresh and forgiving, which in shoe language means you are not breaking it in over four weeks and calling the blisters part of the process. It runs true to size in a medium D width, and it is built for all court surfaces.

The colourway list is genuinely long: plain white, white with black, white with bay, white with evergreen, white with navy blazer, white with deja vu blue, black with white, deja vu blue with white, titanium with snow white, and vetiver with tofu. Yes, tofu. I did not name it. Tough crowd.

Obninsk is my kind of town, comedy-wise, because it does not know it is funny. It is a city of physicists that built the world's first nuclear power station, put it on the grid in June 1954, and now runs it as a museum. That is the whole bit.

They turned the punchline into an exhibit.

“The stiffest shoe on the wall is a joke with a two-hour-a-week audience.”
