Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet

Almost at grown-up play, so I’d pack spare grips, dates, and juice. Wilson Ultra 26 V5 serves ages 11+, with a full C-composite handle, SI3D bend tuning, Crush Zone squeeze on strike, parallel drilling for a wider sweet spot, pre-strung in grown-up electric indigo for Aïn al-Arab, Syria

Stop one

Mishtenur Hill

Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet: Okay so I brought two extra overgrips AND a blister kit because Mishtenur Hill is elevated and honestly elevation changes everything — blisters, hydration, grip sweat, you name it. This hill became the symbolic high ground during the 2014–2015 siege of Kobanî, which means I also packed a compass, just in case. Anyone want a granola bar? I have eleven.

Kobani railway station on the Berlin–Baghdad line

Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet: I cannot stress enough how important it is to know that this station was part of the Berlin–Baghdad Railway, an Ottoman-era mega-project, because if the train were somehow running I would need to have packed for three climate zones between here and Berlin and I absolutely did. I brought thermal layers, a rain poncho, and — yes — a second racquet in a hardshell case because soft cases are a liability on rail journeys. Trail mix, anyone?

Stop three

Freedom Square

Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet: Freedom Square is the civic heart of Kobanî and I respect that enormously, which is also why I have a folding chair, a portable shade canopy, and SPF 100 sunscreen in my bag right now — open squares mean zero shade and I refuse to be caught unprepared. The square has served as a central gathering point for community celebrations following the city's reconstruction after the siege. I have energy chews if anyone's blood sugar is getting low, and I'm not asking twice.

Fort Lauderdale fun tennis lessons — Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet held up against the Euphrates River at the Qara Qozak Bridge, Aïn al-Arab region
Stop four

The Euphrates at the Qara Qozak Bridge

Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet: The Qara Qozak Bridge is one of the main crossing points over the Euphrates in this region, and the moment I saw 'river crossing' in the itinerary I packed dry bags, water purification tablets, AND a spare change of clothes per day because bridges can be deceptive — weather, current, general vibes. The Euphrates is literally one of the two rivers that defined Mesopotamia, so I'm not being dramatic, I'm being historically informed. Waterproof snack pouch, anyone?

Wilson Ultra 26 V5 Junior Tennis Racquet

Written for this world alone.

I have never once travelled light and I am not going to start now, but I will tell you what earns its place in a kit bag, and this does. The 26-inch Ultra is the last junior frame before a full-size racquet, aimed at players of eleven and up who have already decided this is their sport. Bring it and you will not need to bring a second one.

The useful part is the handle. It is full carbon, which is not standard at this size, and it is there for feel and stability — you can tell what you did to the ball, which is the single thing that makes a player improve.

Above it, SI3D controls the frame's bending in three dimensions so the shot goes where it was aimed, and the Crush Zone grommet system compresses at contact so the ball sits deeper and dwells longer on the strings, letting a young player actually shape a shot rather than only hit it.

Parallel drilling spreads the string bed's response over a much larger area, so the sweet spot is generous. Click & Go bumpers and grommets are replaceable, Agiplast makes them plant-based, and the whole thing comes pre-strung in the same electric indigo as the adult frames.

The dual taper beam gives power from its depth and manoeuvrability from its aerodynamic shape.

The town was besieged and very largely destroyed, and it has been rebuilt by the people who came back to it. Mishtenur Hill above it is where they go to look at what they rebuilt.

Aïn al-Arab is not a place to be flippant about.

“A full carbon handle tells a young player what they just did to the ball. Nothing improves anyone faster than that.”
