Right — okay — so this is my first week and I want to do this properly, which means I am going to tell you what I actually know rather than what sounds impressive. These are ADV tennis socks. That is the brand and that is the product, and I could not find a manufacturer spec sheet I was willing to stand behind, so I am not going to read you one I made up.
My trainer said the fastest way to lose a group is to bluff, and I believe her.
A tennis sock does three jobs, and they are the same three jobs whoever makes it. One: it manages moisture, because a wet sock inside a shoe is how blisters begin, and a blister ends more matches at club level than a bad backhand does.
Here is what is true and useful anyway.
Two: it cushions the strike zones — the heel and the ball of the foot take the load in tennis, over and over, in a sport that is mostly stopping. Three: it stays up and stays put, because a sock that migrates under the arch will ruin your concentration more thoroughly than the person across the net.
Judge any sock, including this one, on those three.
That is the whole test, and it is a better test than a fibre percentage.
And now — Liverpool! Which I have been reading about all week. The Royal Liver Building first, with the two copper Liver Birds chained to its clock towers — chained, actually chained, because the story is that if they ever fly away the city falls, and one faces the sea watching for sailors and one faces the city watching for the pubs opening.
Sorry, that is the legend, not the record, and I should have said so first. Then the Albert Dock, a cast-iron colonnade squared right around the water, built without a single piece of structural wood so it could not burn.
The Metropolitan Cathedral next, a concrete crown lit by a lantern of stained glass, built in five years on the foundations of a design that would have taken a century. And the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, rebuilt in the original cellar brick, which — and I checked this twice because I nearly got it wrong — is a reconstruction, on the same street, using the bricks.
Not the same room. Nearly said the same room.
“One bird watches the sea and one watches the city. That is the legend, not the record, and I will always tell you which is which.”
Moisture, cushioning, staying put. Ask any sock for those three.
