I have worn a great many shoes into a great many places I was warned not to go, and I ask you: what is the actual currency out there? Weight. The Jet Tere 2 Premium is the lightest model Babolat makes, reworked into a cleaner and frankly more elegant object without conceding anything — a streamlined upper, a highly breathable mesh, a shoe that in size 42.5 EU comes in at 320 g.
That is extraordinary for something you can genuinely stop hard in. I have never needed one. You may.
It is not a maximum-stability model.
Integrated lateral reinforcements sit inside and outside the shoe rather than being stitched over the top, which is how it stays this light and still holds a foot through a change of direction. A single-layer mesh construction breathes like nothing I have taken into real heat.
What is under it deserves an account.
A firm rubber piece protects the inner forefoot down to the toes — nobody warned me about how quickly that spot goes, once, years ago, and I have checked for it ever since. The midsole is 5 percent thicker than the previous generation for more cushioning at every contact with the ground.
The outsole thickness has been increased specifically in the areas that wear fastest, and it is Michelin premium rubber, the most durable compound they make. Colourway: Dark Blue. From a house that has been at this since 1875.
Maseru, then, and Maseru rewards a walker. The Basotho Hat is a craft market built in the cone shape of the mokorotlo off the national flag, which is a building that tells you what it is from two streets away. Lancer's Gap is the notch cut clean through the sandstone ridge on the eastern skyline — you see it from the whole city and you will want to be standing in it.
And half an hour out is Thaba Bosiu, the flat-topped plateau where Moshoeshoe I was never once defeated, which I did not entirely believe until I walked up it and understood the ground.
You will get use out of these everywhere from that sandstone climb to a hard court back home in midsummer, and by the way, they are also perfect for a long afternoon over papa and moroho with a blanket over your shoulders, because the evening comes in cold here and nobody warned me about that either.
"Thaba Bosiu was never taken. Walk up it once and you stop asking why."
