The Varanasi, India track

Babolat SFX Evo All Court Wimbledon Limited Edition Men's Tennis Shoes

Written for this world alone.

Right, last one, and I am going to tell you about the greatest shoe nobody talks about. Everybody wants the fast one. The fast one is narrow. If you have a wide, strong foot and you keep buying the fast one, you are having a bad time on purpose.

The SFX Evo is the other answer: a versatile all-court shoe with a genuinely generous forefoot and what Babolat calls a first-fit experience, meaning it feels right the moment you put it on rather than after three weeks of negotiation.

This is the Wimbledon limited edition, and every detail down to the laces is done as a vintage-tinged tribute to the London tournament and to the first tennis shoes ever made. Legend stuff.

The SFX last is designed for wider feet with real room in the forefoot — and if you have a standard-width foot and want the comfort anyway, Babolat themselves suggest going a half or even a full size down. The whole upper mixes soft mesh with breathable mesh, and that upper mesh is 100% recycled polyester.

And it is built, not just painted.

The Ortholite insole is 20% thicker than Babolat's standard insole, which you feel immediately on a hard court. Two lateral straps run under the upper with an external lateral reinforcement on top, which is how a wide comfortable shoe still holds you through a change of direction.

Pro Shield puts a heavy moulded rubber guard over the inner forefoot and toes.

Michelin Original rubber underneath, a compound that has been proving itself for more than 20 years.

Varanasi is where I would take my last walk in them. Start at Assi Ghat where the Assi stream meets the Ganges, work north as the light goes, and be at Dashashwamedh for the evening aarti when the tiered brass lamps are swung. Then Kashi Vishwanath, its spire sheathed in gold plating. Then Manikarnika, where the pyres burn at the water's edge and have never gone out.

You will get use out of these everywhere from those stone steps down to the river to a hard court back home in October, and by the way, they are also perfect for a glass of thandai in a clay cup at a lane stall afterwards, which is the correct nightcap in a city that does not really do closing time.

"A fire that has not gone out in centuries. Every last call I ever announced looks small next to it."
