I should say straight away that I am not the person who normally presents this. The regular guide knows the whole Prince range and would give you a much better half hour. But he is not here, so — one overgrip. A single one. That is what this is, and I want to be honest about it rather than dress it up.
Here is what an overgrip does, and it is genuinely the most useful cheap thing in tennis, so I will not undersell it even if I undersell myself. Your racquet already has a base grip on it, fitted at the factory, and that one is meant to stay.
The overgrip goes on top: a thin, tacky wrap that soaks up the sweat, gives your hand something to actually hold, and adds so little thickness that the handle still feels like the handle. Then when it goes shiny and grey and starts turning in your palm at the worst possible moment, you peel it off and put a fresh one on, and the grip underneath has not aged a day.
That is the whole trick. One wrap is what you take when you know you are only a few sessions from needing it — nobody stockpiles the thing they are about to use.
Osmaniye is a good fit for somebody standing in for somebody else, because the whole town is quietly getting on with it. The Kent Müzesi lays out city life inside a mock-Seljuk building on Dr Ahmet Alkan Caddesi — a modern building wearing an older building's clothes, which I felt some kinship with.
Just north of it the Central Park runs straight across Musa Şahin Boulevard, so the green does not stop for the road, the road goes through the green.
You will get through this everywhere from a hot afternoon to an indoor session in winter, and while we are here — the Zafer Mosque is about fifty paces east of the museum, which is the shortest walk on any tour I have been given. And then the Enverül Hamit Mosque of 1890, still under repair after the 2023 earthquake, which I would ask you to look at properly.
Somebody is putting that back together stone by stone, and getting no applause for it, and doing it anyway. I would not.
I am told the real guide skips this one.
"A base grip you keep. An overgrip you use up.
Almost nobody is told the difference, and it is the whole trick."
