Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 15L Tennis String Reel

This 656-foot drum of unkillable lime-green spin, the thickest gauge Hyper-G makes. And before you cut a single string off it, it has a Phuket itinerary to announce — LOUDLY, twice, with a drumroll.

A 45-metre seated Buddha in bright white Burmese marble on a broad hilltop terrace, marble slabs catching the sun, prayer bells and gold-tipped finials around the base, jungle hills and sea far below.
Stop one

Thalang Road, Phuket Old Town

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 15L Tennis String Reel: Sorry – is everyone… yes. Right. This street is the core of the old town, put up during Phuket's tin-mining boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Hokkien Chinese merchants and European traders between them produced the hybrid Sino-Portuguese style you can see running the entire length of it, and I'm aware that was one very long sentence. On Sunday evenings the road closes and becomes the Lard Yai walking street market. That's the whole of it, honestly. I can stop there. Unless. No. Sorry.

A tiered Thai temple complex in white and gold with steep multi-level red-and-gold tiled roofs, gilded naga balustrades and a tall three-storey chedi with a spire, set among frangipani trees.
Stop two

Chinpracha House

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 15L Tennis String Reel: I won't be long here, people actually live in this one. It was built in 1903 by a tin-mining family who had done extremely well, and it is among the finest surviving Sino-Portuguese mansions on the island – not my opinion, I'd never, that's simply what it is. The sixth generation descended from the original owner, Phra Pitak Chinpracha, are still inside. Which is why I'm speaking quietly. Am I quiet enough? Sorry. I'll move us along.

03

A narrow street of two-storey Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted mustard, pink, mint and pale blue, with arcaded five-foot walkways, louvered shutters and stucco mouldings, hung with lanterns and dense overhead wiring.
Stop three

Phuket Thaihua Museum

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 15L Tennis String Reel: Oh – you waited for me. You didn't have to wait. This opened in 1934 as a school teaching classes in Hokkien Chinese, the first and the only institution of its kind in the province, which I think is rather remarkable, though I accept nobody asked me. Inside there are now exhibitions on the life, the customs, the beliefs and the history of Phuket's Hokkien Chinese migrant community, and on how that community sat with the wider island population. There is more. There is a great deal more. I'll spare you.

04

A bare grassy headland of dark rock falling steeply into blue sea, tufted with palms and casuarinas, with a small white-and-cream lighthouse tower on the crest and a row of elephant figurines at a shrine.
Stop four

Wat Chalong (Wat Chaithararam)

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 15L Tennis String Reel: Last one, I'll be brief, and then you're free of me. The temple is nineteenth century and is held to two founding monks, Luang Pho Chaem, 1827 to 1908, and Luang Pho Chuang. In 1876, during the Angyee disturbances, when unrest broke out among the Chinese labourers in the tin mines, Luang Pho Chaem was abbot here. He took in islanders who came for refuge, used his knowledge of herbal medicine to treat the injured, and was central to restoring the peace. It is the largest and most revered temple on Phuket. I'll stop talking now. Thank you for – yes. Thank you.

The Phuket, Thailand track

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 15L Tennis String Reel

Written for this world alone.

SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SIX FEET. Two hundred metres. ONE reel. This is Solinco Hyper-G in the 15L gauge, 1.35mm, the thickest string in the family and the one that flatly refuses to saw through, and there is enough lime-green co-polyester on this drum to string roughly sixteen racquets without leaving the house — or, if you happen to be in Phuket, without leaving the island.

Here is the part worth shouting about: the SQUARE profile. Four real edges, not a round string doing an impression of one. They grab the ball and turn it over instead of letting it skid off. TruTension holds the tension you set, so the frame you string in March and the frame you string in September still feel like the same racquet. Firm, controlled, absurdly durable.

You will get use out of this everywhere from the resort courts at Patong to a shaded public court up in Kathu, holding its shape in the Phuket humidity that flattens softer strings by the second set.

The 15L sits at the durability end of seven gauges running 15L all the way down to 20, the widest range Solinco offers, so this is the reel for the player who destroys strings for sport.

And by the way, that square-edged bite runs on the same principle as a sepak takraw ball, Thailand's beloved woven-rattan kick-volleyball, where the entire trick is a textured surface you can steer in mid-air. Same idea. Different limbs. Louder crowd.
