Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 17g Tennis String Reel

This green 1.20 mm poly is a pressure drop on a spool: 200 metres of squall waiting to burst. Nothing is bought before the chase. The cell is building over Mascara, I need you in the passenger seat, and we run mosque, ridge line and ramparts on the way.

An Ottoman-era mosque of thick whitewashed masonry with a square stone minaret capped by a small lantern and green tiles, horseshoe-arched arcades around a plain courtyard, in the dense old centre of town.

Mosque of Mohammed ben Othmane (Mustapha Bentouhami Mosque)

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 17g Tennis String Reel: (turning slowly, one hand raised) FEEL the year. 1747. Hadj Othman ben Ibrahim, bey of the western beylik, founds this mosque, one of the oldest in the whole wilaya of Mascara, and I need every one of you to breathe that in through the nose. Then Bey Mohamed ben Othmane el-Kebir arrives, enlarges it, brings WATER to it, builds five basins for ablutions and replaces the minbar. Five. Basins. (beat) Mascara had been capital of the beylik of the West since 1701, and this is the building programme of that Ottoman heyday. Yes I am crying. No I will not apologise.

A tight grid of flat-roofed courtyard houses in cracked ochre lime render, shaded narrow lanes, doorways with iron studs, and the eroded stumps of a thick rammed-earth wall running along the quarter's edge.
Stop two

The Palace of the Bey (Emir Abdelkader's headquarters)

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 17g Tennis String Reel: (softly, from the wings) End of 1792. Mohamed ben Othmane, bey of Oran, raises this palace as the seat of government of the western beylik. Hold that. Now — (front and centre, full voice) — 1832, Abd el-Kader is proclaimed emir, he makes Mascara his capital, and he installs himself in THIS BUILDING, which serves as his high command until French forces take the city in 1841. Nine years of a people's command run out of these rooms. The tribunal next door, also 1792, housed the judicial system he established. Nobody exits. FEEL it.

Dry green-brown limestone ridges in long folds, terraced vineyards and olive groves on the lower slopes, scattered pine and scrub above, and a deep ravine cutting the plateau the town sits on.
Stop three

Sidi Hassan Mosque

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 17g Tennis String Reel: (whisper, and I mean a real whisper) One of only two eighteenth-century mosques in Mascara still standing from the Ottoman beylik period. And on 4 February 1833, here, the second oath of allegiance to Abd el-Kader was taken, confirming the leadership first offered to him out on the plain of Ghriss the year before, and opening the seventeen-year resistance he led from this city. Seventeen years. (hold the pause; hold it; hold it) You are standing where a decision began. Do not shuffle your feet. Not in here.

Low thick-walled North African civic buildings in weathered lime plaster with small deep-set windows, plain arched doorways and flat terraced roofs, standing on the old town streets.
Stop four

The Bab Ali Quarter and its earthen ramparts

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 17g Tennis String Reel: (palm flat against the earth wall) This is MASONRY, people, and it is holding on for our benefit. Bab Ali takes its name from one of the gates of the walled town, and it preserves the best-surviving remains of the earthen rampart raised to defend Mascara under the Ottoman beylik, when the city was seat of the beys of the West from 1701. The quarter kept its pre-colonial street pattern straight through the French period. These fragments are the principal physical trace of the fortified capital Abd el-Kader used in the 1830s. (voice breaking) Earth. Only earth. Still standing.

The Mascara, Algeria track

Solinco Heaven Strings Hyper-G 17g Tennis String Reel

Written for this world alone.

Right — quick briefing, we do not have all day. Hyper-G is a co-polyester monofilament with a squared profile; this is 17 gauge, 1.20mm, one step down from the 1.30mm and noticeably livelier for it. The reel is 656 ft, 200 m. A set is 40 ft / 12.2 m, so a reel is sixteen frames, which is what you want when you are burning through strings faster than you are buying them.

Mascara sits up on its plateau above the plain of Ghriss with the Beni Chougrane ridges behind it, and weather arrives there without asking permission.

Here is why the shape matters and why you should care in the next thirty seconds. Four edges instead of a smooth face means the string catches the ball and drags it into rotation, and at 1.20mm those edges cut deeper than any thicker gauge manages. The trade is honest: less material breaks sooner.

TruTension keeps the bed from dropping tension in the opening hour, which is the difference between a string you trust and one you are constantly re-reading. You will get use out of this everywhere from the courtyard shade of the Djamaa El Kebir in Mascara to the ridge tops of the Beni Chougrane, where the terraced vineyards run out and the cloud builds over the ravine.

And while you are up there, look down at the rammed-earth wall along the Bab Ali quarter. Two centuries of weather have rounded it off and it is still standing, ochre and pitted, which is more than most things in Mascara can say.

That is the argument for a co-polyester over a soft multifilament: it is not comfortable and it is not gentle, but it does not fold when conditions turn. Hold the reel, cut what you need and get moving — the cell is not going to wait for you.
