Volkl V-Cell V1 Pro Tennis Racquet

This is the middle entry that makes the columns agree: a mid-plus 16×19 bed, a weight most arms can carry for three sets, a stiffened throat and a damped handle. Count it twice if you like, but not before it has taken you round Chittagong — a hilltop courthouse, sacred turtles, a war cemetery, a beach of dismantled ships.

Chittagong, Bangladesh
01
cardiovascular session — Chittagong Court Building and Parade Ground in Chittagong, Long yellow colonial-era courthouse on Fairy Hill above the city, overlooking the open Parade Ground
Stop one

Chittagong Court Building and Parade Ground

Volkl V-Cell V1 Pro Tennis Racquet: Start with the siting, because the siting is the design. A long yellow courthouse placed on top of Fairy Hill, which buys it drainage, a breeze, and sightlines over the whole city and the river, and hands you the same sightlines for nothing. Below it, the Parade Ground. In April 1930 revolutionaries led by Surya Sen raided the British armouries here in Chittagong, seized the weapons, cut the telegraph lines and held independence for a few days. And here is the failure mode, which is the part I always want first: they could not find the ammunition. Took the guns, missed the bullets. Excellent plan, no bill of materials. I have watched entire plants go down for exactly that reason and not one of them had a better excuse.

02
cardiovascular session — Shrine of Bayazid Bostami in Chittagong, Hilltop shrine north of Chittagong city reached by a long stairway, with a large tank below full of rare black soft-shell turtles
Stop two

Shrine of Bayazid Bostami

Volkl V-Cell V1 Pro Tennis Racquet: Two systems on one hill and both of them work, which is two more than most sites manage. Up the long stairway, the shrine. Down at the bottom, a tank holding large black soft-shell turtles that live nowhere else in the wild – one of the rarest turtle populations anywhere on earth – kept going for centuries purely because people here consider them sacred and feed them. Now look at that as an engineered installation: an enclosed water body, a guaranteed food input, a maintenance crew consisting of everybody who walks past, and no budget line whatsoever. Life support with a devotional power supply. I have designed things that failed inside eighteen months. This has run for centuries. The turtle food is sold at the gate.

03
cardiovascular session — Chittagong War Cemetery in Chittagong, Immaculately kept terraced Commonwealth war cemetery with rows of flat stone markers and lawns on Badshah Mia Road
Stop three

Chittagong War Cemetery

Volkl V-Cell V1 Pro Tennis Racquet: Terraced ground, flat stone markers, lawns cut level, and it is the best-maintained site in the city by a considerable distance. Around seven hundred graves here from the Second World War, when Chittagong served as a supply base for the Burma campaign, and the men on this hillside came from Britain, Africa, Japan and undivided India, buried together. I look at everything on this tour and ask how it was built and whether it holds up. Here the honest answer is that the structure is grass, stone and drainage, and the thing genuinely holding it up is that somebody has turned up and done the work, without a single gap, for eighty years. That is the only maintenance schedule I have ever seen keep its promise.

04
cardiovascular session — Sitakunda ship-breaking yards in Chittagong, Long stretch of tidal beach north of Chittagong where ocean-going ships are run aground and dismantled by hand
Stop four

Sitakunda ship-breaking yards

Volkl V-Cell V1 Pro Tennis Racquet: Now this is tidal engineering that nobody engineered. In 1960 a cyclone drove a large cargo ship onto this beach and it could not be refloated, so it sat there. Eventually it was sold for scrap and cut up where it lay – and somewhere in that process somebody read the actual specification of this coastline: the tidal range here is enormous, which means you can run a ship straight up onto the sand at high water and walk out to it dry at low. No dock. No gantry. No graving dock costing a fortune to build and more to pump. The beach is the dry dock, twice a day, free of charge. An entire industry derived from one storm and a refusal to waste anything. It is costly in other ways, mind, and I will not pretend otherwise.

The Chittagong, Bangladesh track

Written for this world alone.

I count things twice. Not because I distrust you — because the second count is the only one that means anything, and because a number written down without being checked is just a rumour with a decimal point.

So let us be careful about what the V-Cell V1 Pro actually is. It is Volkl's tweener: a frame that sits deliberately between a light recreational racquet and a heavy player's stick.

That means a comfortable mid-plus head and a 16×19 pattern, a moderate weight most club players can swing for three sets without their arm complaining, and a build biased toward stability and comfort rather than raw mass.

Volkl's V-Cell material stiffens the hoop and yoke to hold the frame steady through contact while cutting the fatigue a stiff frame usually causes, and REVA damping in the handle removes vibration and adds torsional stability. In the hand it is easy to swing and noticeably plusher than most frames in its class.

If you have outgrown a beginner's racquet but a 320-gram player's frame leaves you late on the ball, this is the entry in the ledger that balances.

Chittagong is a city that keeps a running total.

Climb Fairy Hill to the long yellow Chittagong Court Building and the whole city and the river are laid out below you for nothing at all — no charge, and in April 1930 the Parade Ground beneath it was where Surya Sen's revolutionaries raided the British armouries, took the weapons, cut the telegraph lines and declared independence for a few days.

They could not find the ammunition. Took the guns, missed the bullets. In my line of work that is buying the printer without checking the cartridge price.

The rest of the ledger reads better. North of the city the Shrine of Bayazid Bostami sits at the top of a long stairway above a tank of large black soft-shell turtles that live nowhere else in the wild, protected for centuries with no conservation budget whatsoever, purely because people kept feeding them — though the turtle food at the gate is priced optimistically.

Up the coast at Sitakunda the tidal range is so enormous you can run an ocean-going ship straight onto the sand at high water and walk out to it at low, an entire industry begun by one cyclone in 1960 and a refusal to waste anything.

A frame this steady gets used everywhere from a hard morning court below Fairy Hill to a quiet evening knock near the war cemetery, and it is also perfect for the Chittagong player who wants one racquet to last a full season rather than a receipt every month.
