I have found something remarkable and I intend to tell you about it at length. The Wilson Blade Pro is not simply a Blade with a different sticker.
In Wilson's line-up, the Pro designation means a frame built for collegiate and tour-level players and made intentionally lighter than the finished playing weight, so that the owner can add weight and shift balance to their own specification. It arrives as a starting point rather than a conclusion.
That is an unusual thing to sell, and I love it.
Underneath, it is the v9 Blade platform, and that platform is properly made: a 98 square inch head, a 16×19 string pattern for spin access and shot-shaping, braided graphite and basalt through the frame — basalt, volcanic rock, woven into the layup for the way it damps and flexes — and a DirectConnect carbon fibre handle that runs into the end cap for torsional stability.
FORTYFIVE degree gives the connected feel, StableFeel sharpens the response, Parallel Drilling makes the string bed consistent. This is the control frame of a player who knows what they want and finishes the racquet themselves.
Which is exactly the spirit of Bled, a place I discovered entirely on my own, along with several hundred thousand other people a year. On the island in the lake stands the Church of the Assumption, and inside it a rope hangs down from the bell, and you pull it. You.
Not a bell-ringer, not a mechanism — the wish is yours to ring, and the finishing is left to the visitor.
Same idea as the racquet, and I will not be persuaded otherwise.
Bled Castle sits on a crag a hundred metres above the water, which is the only sensible place to put a castle and yet so few people do it. At Mlino, the pletna boatmen work flat-bottomed boats that are rowed standing up, with two oars, across open water — a technique passed down in specific families for generations, and considerably harder than they make it look.
And Vintgar Gorge runs a boardwalk pinned to the rock face above the Radovna, which is the single most alarming and most beautiful thing on this itinerary. I am told it is well known. I refuse to believe it.
"They hang the rope where you can reach it. The finishing is yours."
