Wilson Burn 100S V5 Tennis Racquet

Burnt orange, sweetheart — you will either love that or you will not say so out loud — and under the paint, three hundred unstrung, three fifteen strung, 100 sq in, an 18 by 16 bed that puts real spin on the ball. Kirikkale grew up around an arsenal, and the museum tells you so honestly.

Fort Lauderdale cardiovascular lessons — Wilson Burn 100S V5 tennis racquet held up inside the MKE Weapons Industry Museum among historic rifles and machine tools, Kırıkkale
Stop one

the MKE Weapons Industry Museum, rifles and machine tools from the arsenal that made the town

Wilson Burn 100S V5: Now sweetheart, my cousin Fatma's husband worked at the MKE factory for thirty years — thirty years! — making rifles and artillery parts, and he said the machines in that museum are the very same ones that built this whole city from nothing. I just think it's funny that you're holding a tennis racquet in there, but honestly, at least you're getting some exercise, which is more than I can say for Fatma's husband.

Stop two

the clock tower on the central square beside the Nur Mosque

Wilson Burn 100S V5: Oh sweetheart, that clock tower is right there on the main square next to the Nur Mosque, and my cousin Leyla used to say she could hear the call to prayer and the clock chiming at the same time and it sounded like the city was having a little conversation with itself. Now put the racquet down for one second and tell me — have you eaten? Because you look thin and I have börek in my bag.

Fort Lauderdale cardiovascular lessons — Wilson Burn 100S V5 tennis racquet balanced on the stone parapet of Cesnigir Bridge, a single-arch Ottoman stone bridge over the Kızılırmak River, Kırıkkale
Stop three

Cesnigir Bridge, a single stone arch over the Kizilirmak

Wilson Burn 100S V5: Sweetheart, that is one single stone arch holding up that whole bridge over the Kızılırmak, can you imagine? My cousin Orhan is a civil engineer and he said those old Ottoman builders didn't have computers, not one computer, and still the arch stands perfectly to this day. Orhan, meanwhile, uses three computers and still managed to park his car in a ditch last spring.

Fort Lauderdale cardiovascular lessons — Wilson Burn 100S V5 tennis racquet propped against the embankment of Kapulukaya Dam, sixty-one metres high on the Kızılırmak River, Kırıkkale
Stop four

Kapulukaya Dam, sixty-one metres of embankment holding back the same river

Wilson Burn 100S V5: Now sweetheart, that dam is sixty-one metres tall — sixty-one! — holding back the whole Kızılırmak River, and my cousin Nedret's son did his military service somewhere near here and said you could feel the ground hum from the water pressing on the embankment. I worry about all that water, I do, but I worry more that you haven't had lunch, so we are not leaving this dam until you eat something.

The Kırıkkale, Turkey track

Wilson Burn 100S V5 Tennis Racquet

Written for this world alone.

Come here, let me look at you. Have you eaten? You cannot swing anything on an empty stomach, I do not care what the specification says.

Right. This is the Wilson Burn 100S V5, and I will tell you what it is, plainly, because there is no sense being mysterious. It is 27 inches long. Unstrung it weighs 300 grams, 10.6 ounces, and once it is strung it comes out at 315 grams, 11.1 ounces, balanced four points head light with a swingweight of 316.

The head is 100 square inches, 645 square centimetres.

The beam runs 23, 25, 23 millimetres, the flex is 71, which is stiff, and the graphite construction is what gives it that snap. String it between 50 and 60 pounds.

The grip is Wilson's Sublime.

And the string pattern is 18 mains by 16 crosses, which is unusual and which is the whole point of the S. Fewer crosses means the mains can slide and snap back, and that is what puts the spin on.

This racquet is for somebody who stands on the baseline and hits the thing hard with a lot of shape on it — whippy forehands, heavy slices, the ball dipping down inside the line at the last moment. It is a stiff, punchy frame. It is not the gentle option, and I would not give it to anyone with a sore elbow, and you would tell me if your elbow was sore, wouldn't you.

Wouldn't you.

Now. Kirikkale, my love. This town exists because of an arsenal — the MKE works — and the MKE Weapons Industry Museum has the rifles and the machine tools laid out from the years the whole place was built around that one plant. It is more moving than you expect, because what you are looking at is not really weapons, it is the working lives of everybody's grandfathers.

The clock tower stands on the central square beside the Nur Mosque, which is where people meet, and where they have met for decades. Out of town, Cesnigir Bridge throws one single stone arch over the Kizilirmak — one arch, no supports in the water, which is a thing somebody's very clever great-uncle worked out with no computer at all.

And Kapulukaya Dam holds the same river back behind sixty-one metres of embankment. Take a jumper. It gets cold up there in the evening and I will not have you catching something.

"What you are looking at is not really machinery. It is everybody's grandfathers."
