Stop two
the church of St Michael the Archangel, a gift of the Astrakhan diocese
Wilson Pro Staff X V14: The Church of St Michael the Archangel was donated to this town by the Astrakhan diocese — a gift, just like my backhand was a gift, or so the crowd said after I broke serve twice in the final set of the '91 regional title. But, uh, yes — the church. Beautiful. Humbling, really.
In my day the Pro Staff came in one size and you either got on with it or you got out of the way. This is the version that lets you stay. The X is the same 330 grams strung as the 97 — 11.7 ounces, 315 unstrung — the same seven points head light, the same 21.5-millimetre beam flat all the way round.
What changes is the head: 100 square inches instead of 97, and a swingweight of 322 instead of 330. That is three square inches and eight points of swingweight, and it is the difference between a frame that punishes a late ball and one that lets you finish the point anyway.
Braid 45, the double braid at forty-five degrees, so the hoop gives a little at contact and the ball stays on the bed a fraction longer — the plush feel the line has been selling since 1983 and has never faked. String Mapping tightens the crossings through the middle so the response does not wander shot to shot.
Everything that makes the name is still in the layup.
Paradigm Bending puts the flex low in the frame for direction. Flex 65, 16 by 19, strung at 50 to 60 pounds, grips 4 1/8 to 4 1/2, finished in a quiet earth tone that does not shout.
I retired at the right time, and Türkmenbaşy is a town that knows about arriving at the end of the line. The railway stops here because the land does.
Everything after that is water.
“Three square inches. That is all it took to keep a good player in the game five more years.”
