Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes

Almost bare: a single breathable layer, a generous toe box, arch support in the middle. A curved sole carries the stride from heel strike to toe-off, twelve and a half ounces all in; Doncaster's white keep is made of the ground it stands on.

Fort Lauderdale fast paced cardiovascular tennis classes — Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes on the turf of Doncaster Racecourse, Town Moor, with the grandstand behind
Stop one

Doncaster Racecourse on Town Moor, home of the St Leger, the oldest of the five Classics

Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes: Oh, I nearly stepped on a meadow pipit — they nest in the rough at the track margins, you know, marvelous little things. Apparently this is also where they run the St Leger, which I'm told is the oldest of the five Classic horse races, first run in 1776, but frankly the turf here is a glacial outwash deposit and that is far more interesting than any horse.

Fort Lauderdale fast paced cardiovascular tennis classes — Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes on the steps of Doncaster Minster, St George's Church, with Gilbert Scott's tower overhead
Stop two

Doncaster Minster, Gilbert Scott's church of St George

Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes: There is a rather fine jackdaw colony nesting in the stonework up there — Corvus monedula, absolutely thriving in Victorian sandstone. The building itself was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott after a fire destroyed the previous church in 1853, which I admit is quite a dramatic human fact, but look, there is another jackdaw.

Fort Lauderdale fast paced cardiovascular tennis classes — Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes placed on the ironwork floor inside the Doncaster Corn Exchange cast-iron market hall
Stop three

The Corn Exchange and its cast-iron market hall

Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes: The light filtering through those cast-iron roof trusses is extraordinary — it has the diffuse quality you normally only get under a forest canopy, so I understand why the feral pigeons consider this home. The Corn Exchange was built in 1873 and its market hall is a notably early example of large-span cast-iron construction in the region, though I confess the pigeons were the first thing I noticed.

Fort Lauderdale fast paced cardiovascular tennis classes — Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes at the base of Conisbrough Castle's white circular Norman keep above the River Don
Stop four

Conisbrough Castle and its white circular Norman keep above the Don

Wilson Rush Pro Lite Women's Tennis Shoes: Now THIS is geology — that keep is built from magnesian limestone of the Permian Zechstein reef, which is why it has stayed brilliantly white while everything around it weathers brown. Conisbrough Castle's circular keep dates from around 1185 and is one of the oldest and finest in England, and I would think more about that if a peregrine were not, right now, absolutely hunting over the Don valley below us.

Written for this world alone.

Listen to your feet the way you would listen to a hedgerow at dusk: the information is all there, you have simply stopped attending to it. This shoe was built by somebody who did attend. It weighs 12.5 ounces, and everything about it follows from a decision to take weight and structure out and put comfort in.

The upper is a single layer of breathable mesh — one layer, not the stacked constructions used further up the Rush Pro line — which is lighter, cooler, and the reason this is a warm-afternoon shoe. The toe box is wide on purpose, for feet that spread when they are loaded, which is most feet and almost all feet by the second hour.

There is arch technology through the midfoot for stability without stiffness, and the sole is curved so that it supports all three phases of the stride and carries you through the transition from heel strike to toe-off rather than making you fight for it.

The fit is traditional, the look is clean, and the Rush Pro character is still under it — this is a lighter member of the family, not a different animal. Bonnie blue with deja vu blue and white.

Doncaster rewards the same attention. The whole town sits on magnesian limestone, and once you know that, the white Norman keep at Conisbrough stops being a curiosity and becomes a piece of the ground it stands on.

“Wide toe box, single layer, curved sole. Take the structure out and the foot will tell you what it wanted.”
